Dortch projected to be a 5th round pick

Injury issues. Made the correct decision. Keeps getting hurt and might not get drafted. He will be just fine.

This is the reason I think he should have stayed. I think GMs will be very skittish to draft Dortch given his injury issues even with his upside. If he would have stayed a year and remained relatively injury free and put up gaudy stats as he would have, I would think that could have bought him a couple of rounds bump to see he can handle the rigors of a full season while producing more dazzling highlights.

And the diff. in a couple of rounds in guaranteed and total contract values is large.

Seems like we should add response templates for these "X Player Leaves Early" threads, given how predictable the "he's stupid for leaving early" posts are.

what if he stayed another year and got hurt?

by the way, do we have the website that lists Dortch as a 5th-rounder? the internet is a pretty big place

Dortch's "injury issues" are based on a complete and total fluke occurrence and a broken finger...the finger is something he probably would have played through earlier in the season. They aren't the result of the way he plays, etc. No one is going to watch the video of him landing on a pylon in the best game of his career and worry that he's injury prone.

Also look at his numbers after suffering an internal injury while he was bleeding out in that game. The kid is tough as nails. His problem is he’s short and doesn’t seem to be CJ2K, Darren Sproles, etc. fast.

I think it is pretty dumb to critique a kid for making a decision to stay/go pro.

I am sure he (and then Clawson made sure of it) received better information than any of us have.

If I'd been offered a job making good money prior to my senior year, I'd have left too; and I'm pretty damn sure the rest of you would too. Many athletes have shown that you can come back and finish your degree. We're all selfish because we want them to stay longer, but even if he makes the league minimum, it'll most likely be considerably more than he'd have made just out of college.

You get about $200k to $300k signing bonus as a 5th round pick but nothing else is guaranteed in the contract. Not sure that is worth it.

Not sure what is worth $200-300K?

^ This. Are you saying he should go back to Wake for his rJR year because he can get the same money next year ?

Or that he should play baseball instead ?

Who should purchase loss-of-value coverage?
If an athlete chooses to purchase LoV coverage, the NCAA recommends they only do so if they are projected to be selected among the top 10 picks in their respective draft. Athletes projected to be selected outside of that range may have challenges proving their projected value when they file a claim.

How can coverage be paid for?
Subject to conference policies and procedures, schools may permit student-athletes to use the NCAA Student Assistance Fund to purchase either PTD or LoV policies. Student-athletes may also take out loans against their future earnings to pay these premiums. Please note, premiums paid using Student Assistance funds may be considered a taxable benefit to student-athletes and may affect their eligibility for financial aid.

While we're talking injuries, you've gotta figure that as fluky as it was, almost dying as the result of a routine play probably weighed into Dortch's decision to go ahead and declare. He, more than than most, understands how quickly his fortunes can change.

Worth remembering that J Bates was projected at the same place at about the same time. 5th round is the starting point for Dortch.

Also, who cares what role injury motivations played in his decision. It’s his decision that will potentially transform the lives of his whole family. Even if he didn’t think about injuries at all, and just thought he could make some money, good for him.

Why debate the pros and cons of his decision? It's his decision.right or wrong, good or bad. He is the person that has to live with it and accept the consequences or rewards. We have had the benefit of his services for three years and have enjoyed it. Many, if not most on this board, thought Jesse Bates was making a risky decision. A total compensation package of $4,947,814 and a signing bonus of $1,678,410 suggests otherwise. A fifth round pick is worth $2.7 million over four years. The only question most of us would ask if offered the same package to pursue a lifetime dream would be "Where do I sign?"

I have no ill will toward Dortch and actually think he made the right decision after thinking about it a few weeks.
I will day to all those touting him as an AA, he wasn’t an AA WR. He was All Purpose or Return Specialist. There is quite a difference between those with draft perception.

*say* obviously. Damn “edit” function. Work please!!!!
