Exactly. If he kept producing for another year or two he might be in the mix for being drafted in the third round instead of maybe not at all.

This is correct. It doesn't mean it was a terrible decision for him to go pro, it's just that he had a decent chance of playing himself into a better draft pick and a lot more guaranteed money. I agree that he is tough as nails, but playing another season without injuries would have been important for NFL teams.

Also, the comment that is frequently used that, "he isn't going to grow any taller, so he should go" is odd. Essentially none of these players are going to grow taller. But they can demonstrate sustained productivity and the ability to stay on the field.

I don't fault Dortch. I just hope he is getting good intel and that he'll be drafted high, so he can make some money.

not when it is directly responding to a post that says,

Tough odds for a guy... under 6'0 tall

You forgot the "and weights less than 200 lbs," part. A 20 year old can still put on weight even if he isn't going to get taller, and can show he wont lose a step at the increased mass.

The height and weight aspect was to point out that he is at the extreme end of the scale.

Is he 5'9 or 5'7? Does he weight 180 lbs or will it be less? Either way he will still be one of the smallest WR's in the NFL. Another year or two of sustained productivity could have helped improve his draft stock. All these other smaller slot WR's people keep mentioning all played 4 years. Dortch has alot less tape for coaches to evaluate him on.

I really hope he gets drafted, thrives in the NFL, and has a great career. I just think he has long odds.

put on weight like Saquan Barkley?

Another year of productivity could marginally help him

An injury could end his career before he gets $1 from the NFL

I don't think the odds equation is that much different from this year to next

IIRC, a lot of people questioned Jesse Bates decision to turn pro last year. It seems to have worked out well for him. Maybe Dortch is getting information from the same source as Bates. I wish he had stayed. He didn't. Wish him all the best.

I was really surprised he declared. While he was a great player at Wake, and thought he could play in the NFL, he seemed maybe on the small side and that baller ass AM receiver just shrugged him aside a time or two... but then he was awesome in the nfl and I’m an idiot on a couch. JB3 FTW.

Wouldn't be surprised if Haynes ranks high in some categories in comparison to the other OLs at the combine (i.e. bench, 40, cone drills).

I am surprised Anderson wasn't invited. A guy who can play center, guard, and some tackle. I believe he played tackle and center for us.

Preseason Dabo had mentioned Ryan Anderson as his choice for all-ACC center. If he doesn't go to combine and get drafted, somebody may get a steal as an undrafted free agent.

#ihopemyteamdraftshim

But seriously, the Panthers need another Ryan at C.

Right, but nobody's drafting Dortch on what he's achieved. They'd only be drafting on potential instead of drafting a different player who's got a longer track record of major college success.

Well..that is one way to look at it. Another would be to say that Dortch had the majority of two years healthy and was highly productive. The only significant injury having been a freakish kind of play — and injury.Also.. a twenty year old “invincible” kid faced his mortality in the wee hours of the morning. That kind of ordeal has been known to grow a person.I don’t question his maturity because of the leadership and un-selfishness he has shown.

Additionally, from a scouting perspective, the HC could attest that Greg lit his defense up multiple times a week as a scout teamer in his first year. Just as Clawson had said of Bates..he easily could have started as a true freshman and excelled.

As a scout you could look at long term viability..he is very young yet he is mature beyond his years. He needs 10 pounds and still clock electronic 4.47-4.52. Shifty. Opposition rarely gets a good hit on him. Unafraid. Will return punts and run in traffic. Highly motivated self starter. Loves football. Great teammate. Community guy. Would be great in a commercial promoting faster networks...

It frustrates me that we only got two years of these guys, while they could have contributed in year 1.
