Police and Prison Abolition Thread

mhb or others, have you read any good analysis of what happened Wednesday through an abolitionist lens?

while there were definitely cops in the takeover crowd and cops assisting with the entrance to the Capitol, it was also the cops/military that ultimately cleared the space

curious to see the abolitionist take on it all

separately but related, I find it notable that the same direct action tactics used to shut down, say, eviction court were used to shut down the certification process

This isn’t an analysis of what happened, but a rebuttal to all those calling for harsher punishments for the participants

Haven’t read it yet, but a place to start:

It’s a good read overall. I wouldn’t lump what happened on Wednesday with policing overall. The siege of the Capitol was a security failure. They were tasked with protecting the Capitol and the people and sensitive property inside against people not authorized to be there. They failed.

That’s very different from roving hordes of armed cops with no specific mission going around looking for trouble.

Insurrections to private or public prisons it is then.

What?

Most of the abolitionist leaders are saying this is not a big deal or meaningless. That it’s an ineffective rehashing of Obama era policy and that it doesn’t apply to DHS which is where a lot of the private contracts are.
