Police and Prison Abolition Thread

What?

Most of the abolitionist leaders are saying this is not a big deal or meaningless. That it’s an ineffective rehashing of Obama era policy and that it doesn’t apply to DHS which is where a lot of the private contracts are.

Sounds like a huge change - I wonder if the city is more or less likely to pass it knowing all eyes will be on them, for better or for worse.

Also, Illinois governor is signing the Pretrial Fairness Act to end money bail in Illinois. Huge win for organizers.

Kaba’s new book on abolition makes NYTimes bestseller list.

Between Trevor Noah and bell hooks. Impressive.

George Floyd's family is getting a $27 million settlement from the City of Minneapolis. Or more correctly, George Floyd's family is getting something around $20 million, and the attorneys are getting a nice chunk.

I'm a lawyer, but it just seems like an odd system that the when a family member gets tragically murdered the upshot is that the extended family of the victim and some random attorney advocate who holds some press conferences and puts together a compelling presentation hits the lottery. Not proposing any better alternatives or even disagreeing with the result.

What happens to the people who do $27 million worth of wrong and the people that taught them to do it, support them doing it and defend them doing it?

They keep having their mistakes, nay malice, paid for with taxpayer dollars!

FOP should be the one on the hook for payouts

Tom Cotton offers this intriguing counterpoint to this whole thread:

Cotten is right. We will be be grossly under-incarcerated until all Trump family members and their traitorous followers are in supermax or GITMO.

Racial disparities is California police stops *increased* between 2019-2021, if anyone was wondering how effective the protests have been in the most “liberal” state in the country. You can also take a quick guess as to whether police budgets have been “defunded” or have increased.

If there is any question who racial justice advocates are really fighting and protesting, the answer is: voters.
