Diamond Deacs 2019 (Offseason) | 5 Deacs Drafted

A's first round pick from 2017 (#6 overall) Austin Beck is also from the area...drafted out of North Davidson HS.

... And O's take Morgan McSweeney to start the 17th.

That wraps up the 3 juniors that Wake expected to be picked and also expects to sign. As I put on Twitter, the biggest news for the Deacs so far is that Lanzilli wasn't drafted yesterday and hasn't been drafted in the first 10 rounds today, so even if he gets picked today, it would be a team taking a flier on him and hoping to either A) have enough money left over to sign him or B) convince to leave school early for significantly less than his requested signing bonus.

None of their signees have been drafted either.

Thought Loubier went in the 13th round?

To round up the stories I've written in the past week or so on the Deacs:

The 4 guys picked in the third day of the draft: https://www.journalnow.com/sports/c...cle_180da20e-0240-59ce-9b8d-ad3f39076d1b.html

Colin Peluse was a 9th-round pick: https://www.journalnow.com/sports/c...cle_11ace126-7bbe-51fd-b4e2-609899106111.html

And the one from yesterday, on the gears already turning to improve the pitching next season and a glimpse of what the rotation will look like: https://www.journalnow.com/sports/c...cle_623c95a3-4f5b-58ef-a947-c7104df80ec2.html

Holyyyy Shitttt.

Nearly batted around twice in the top of the 1st which lasted nearly an hour.

...while the Noles are going to Omaha after taking the Deacs spot thanks to our choke vs. the Pack after we beat the Noles in first game. Oh what could have been.

After losing to WF 7-4 to open the ACC tournament, FSU has not lost since winning their way to Omaha.

FSU is motivated to win for their retiring coach. Our pitchers would've just gotten hammered in the first two games and that woulda been that

We could have maybe won a game. Possibly two. Hard to see us advancing though.

Agree that even had WF gotten in, WF lacked the arms to make a run, but FSU's run is pretty remarkable. They were the 3rd seed in the Athens regional, which means that they were one of the last at-large teams in the field. Not only did they knock out UGA and LSU on the road, but FSU and Miss. State are the only two teams in the entire field of 64 that have not lost a game in the tournament.

Along with Peluse and McSweeney, looks like Carter Bach also signed per twitter, with Bach being a pretty big surprise. He would have helped out next year. Despite his late draft status, I think Bach has a chance given his frame and stuff if he can get his mechanics more consistent.

Old news, but: the SF Giants hired former Diamond Deac RHP Michael Holmes (played in the mid1990s) as their director of Amateur Scouting last December. Holmes had been the A's assistant scouting director.

Ross Atkins who played with Holmes at WF is the Blue Jays GM.

Pretty solid pitcher’s dual tonight in Omaha.

Re: the discussion of Vandy scholarships, I found this:

www.anchorofgold.com/platform/amp/2019/5/30/18645077/opportunity-vanderbilt-an-explainer

Consider the source. But:

1. No mention of academic aid given to players
2. According to the article, if a player is given any athletic aid, then all additional (need or merit) counts against the 11.7 rule (so Vandy must determine who is eligible for need and give those guys zero athletic $)
3. The average elite baseball prospect comes from a family that has at least some means, to fund the travel baseball, etc.

According to Jim Callis on Twitter, Blake Loubier signed with the Red Sox for $500k.
