2020 Republican Presidential Nominees

Is jhmd running? Is that why he can’t post anymore behind an anonymous username?

This merits a WTF? Politically, he's somewhere in between Trump and Weld. But he's political Alpo because his political legacy is being the subject of the euphemism "hiking the Appalachian Trail". He's not taking any votes from Trump. All he can do is siphon a few votes from Weld. More people want Bill di Blasio to be president than Sanford. He's in Maryanne Williamson territory.

Sanford is a weird case. He’s a fairly likable political figure but he has a tough personal and political scandal to come back from. His politics are far less likable than his persona but he gets props for being willing to stand up to Trump.

He is not quite as bad since he continued in politics post governorship. He has ties to Florida and SC. The Appalachian Trail incident is very Trumpesque. Would be interesting to see someone other than a Democrat bring some heat to Trump.

Both Sanford and Weld are damaged goods - Sanford because of the scandal and Weld because he ran as veep on the Lib ticket last time out, which won't sit well with the party. Hogan or Baker would be better and more popular candidates, but I doubt either would still top 20% v. Trump. It's a cult.

As long as there is somebody he needs to focus on - someone who will relentlessly antagonize him and with a clear flaw (Sanford and Weld are ideal) - then Trump and his social media machine will be tired once we get to the general.

The Republican Party is broken for the next decade post-Trump, but they could send out a sacrificial candidate to do some damage to Trump (body shots) and distract him from the Dems until the general.

You underestimate the Republican party.

Twenty percent of all federal circuit court judges were appointed by Trump and pushed through by McConnell. These are lifetime appointments handed out to people in their 30s. Twenty percent of judgeships in 2 years. McConnell held these seats open for a reason.

Not just that. Just think of the damage Trump could do to the federal judiciary and everything else if reelected. And I'd give him at least a 30-40% chance of being reelected.

None of these candidates really have a chance against Trump. Not only does he own the GOP now, but several states are eliminating their primaries or rigging it so it would be virtually impossible for any of these candidates to win enough primaries to get the nomination, even if they could do so. Having said that, the more Republicans to run against Trump in the primaries the better, because the more of them there are, the more likely it is that the news media will pay attention to them, and no doubt it will be a pain for the White House to deal with, and criticisms from Walsh or Sanford will drive Trump nuts. No doubt lots of Trump's twitter space will be expended on attacking those two during the winter and spring.

I don't like the dude. But I give him props for going against him party to stand up against Trump.

Twitter needs to shut up and let the Trump challengers challenge in peace. This will piss Trump off exponentially more than anything that left Twitter has tweeted since 2015.

Walsh on Morning Joe. Accepts some responsibility for facilitating Trump’s rise. Says he/others overdid the personal attack thing.

Doesn’t mention the increasing dependence of Pubs on dishonesty as a contributor.

He’s right that Trump is a danger to the well being of our nation and the Republican Party.

He’s wrong to imply that Trump’s takeover was largely due to stylistic exaggerations and not the rotting Pub substance/essence he now rules.

Stupid tweet.

1) Tammy Duckworth took his seat and I don't see him getting it back.
2) I can't help it if people in one congressional district are morons.

The idea that any republican would be a legitimate primary challenger is stupid. There aren't even going to be republican primaries.

Despite the supposed "conservatives" that appear on this board to whine about progressive politics while adamantly stating that they didn't vote for the President (and don't support him), anybody who doesn't intend to vote for the democratic nominee loves this administration. There is no statistically significant population of "conservatives" who actually oppose President Trump.

If any Republican candiate can do anything to point out Trump's failures, lies, and hypocrisy, and get any traction with the media in so doing, it's a net positive for the general election and the nation.
