FWIW, Shildt is from Charlotte, NC and took an unusual route to get to be an MLB manager.
After graduating from UNC-Asheville (where he was on the team, but was just another player with no professional prospcets), Shildt got an assistant coaching gig at UNC-Charlotte and ran a baseball training facility in Charlotte. The Cardinals hired as an area scout for the Carolinas. Eventually, the Cards moved Shildt to coach in the low minors and slowly rose through the organization. When the Cardinal fired Mike Matheney in 2018, they hired Shildt as an interim manager and eventually the Cards removed the interim tag. Shildt is only the 8th person to become a manager league manager without playing at any level of professional baseball.
