That interview AA and McGuirk did the other day. Sheesh. They conned the city into paying for a new stadium and are using the new revenue to pay down debt instead of improving the team.

    Gohara supposedly down 35-40 lbs

They did not con the city into anything. The US governments are dumb and love building stadiums for your teams.

Whatís your budgeted payroll for 2019?

Anthopoulos: Weíre not going to say it for obvious reasons what our budgeted payroll is, but we still have a lot of room. We have room to go north of that ó well north of that. But that doesnít mean weíre going to do this just for the sake of doing it. There were players last offseason people thought we shouldíve signed, but from a baseball standpoint it just didnít make sense. AAV-wise (average annual salary), we can shop anywhere. The issue becomes the totality of the deal ó how many years, whatís the total guaranteed dollars, ages, do we believe in them, are there other bells and whistles in the deal. Thatís ultimately what the hangup ends up being. Weíll sign someone or trade for someone if we believe in the deal. I know that might be tough for some people to hear. But we have not had any restrictions. We just donít believe in some of the deals right now.

Where are you at now budget-wise for the 40-man roster and other things you factor in?

Anthopoulos: It just doesnít help my negotiating position right now to say. As much as people want to make moves now, and we do, too, we have to make sure we believe in them. Thereís always windows to spend, whether itís now or July or August.

Can you at least say whether your 40-man payroll is above or below where you were a year ago at this time?

Anthopoulos: I donít remember exactly where we were to start last season.

    McGuirk: Weíre above that.

Anthopoulos: I can tell you this: We were in the bottom 10 last year by the end of the year. Our budgeted number absolutely is trending toward the middle. I know we have the ability to do whatever we want to do.

McGuirk: Those are really all the headlines. Knowing the amount of dead money we had on the books, if we were at $126 million in total, the real money on the field was $85 to $90 million. We still have an appreciable amount of dry powder ready to go. The winter to us is certainly relevant. But the psychological value when you add to your team at the trade deadline is appreciable. We build that into the budget now. Iíve been here a long time. I can never remember us not having dead ó a lot of dead money. Weíre being very careful, just to make sure we donít make that mistake. I saw on social media the last few days, somebody listed the number of deals done between $120 million and $240 million since 2007, and almost all of them have a disaster part in the end. Our goal is not to just be good; itís to be good a long time.

Where do you see your payroll going in the future?

McGuirk: Spending now is about winning. Itís not about building as much. Alexís mandate is to advance the ball from where we were last year in the playoffs. I read where all of the prognosticators have us winning 82 or 84 games. I love being the underdog. The fact that we can take that $126 million and put it on the field, plus an appreciable move beyond that, is unprecedented for us. Weíve been a bottom-10 payroll team for a couple of years. Weíve messaged that we want to get to the middle, and I think this year begins to get us to that neighborhood. I expect that we push beyond that in the coming five years.

Yeah, pretty frustrating that our only "major" off-season moves involved signing/resigning old, injury-prone dudes.

I think I'm okay with Philly signing him.

Negative: Seeing his punchable face as often as when he played for the gNats

Positives: He clogs up a division rivals 3-hole.

Yes. Last year he hit .249 with the most KOs of his career. In 2016 he hit .243

Iím good with a divisional 3-hole hitter putting up those kind of numbers even with an occasional good year thrown in between. The dude is overrated.

This. I don't see why everyone is so up in arms about grabbing him. He's like maybe the 15th best hitter in the NL.

Will be at Spring Training the final week. Getting to Jupiter on March 20. Get to see Yankees @ Cards on Thurs, Cards @ Mets on Friday in Port St Lucie, Cards @ Nationals on Saturday and finish with Cardinals vs Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday. Wake Forest legend George Greer is the Cardinal offensive hitting strategist. Went last year also and got to see the Astros and Verlander pitch on Friday night with Kate Upton in the stands. Also fun to get there in the morning to watch all the players go thru their drills and practices.

I think it is interesting also that the Cardinals complex is on a college campus of Florida Atlantic University. They are one of two sites that host 2 major league teams. Roger Dean Stadium has the Marlins out in left field with all their facilities and the Cardinals take up all of right field. It covers and entire city block. They also play host to 4 minor league baseball teams. 10 miles down the road at the Ballpark at the Palm Beaches, the other double site exists since 2017 where the Washington Nationals & Houston Astros share that complex. You will notice in the Grapefruit League those 4 teams play each other a lot.

Only a casual Barves fan these days, but let me tell you, I am super stoked about their payroll flexibility this year. AND the real estate development around the ball park.
    Runs with deer.
