2022 Atlanta Braves Season Thread: off season decisions loom

It seems like the record it's going to take to ensure winning the division is around 85 wins, which just requires the Braves to go .500 from here on out. In order to reach 85 wins, the Phillies would have to go 9-3 over their remaining 12 games, which includes a series with the Braves. The Phillies schedule is very easy, but if you assume they drop at least one game in the Pirates and Marlins series, the Braves really just need to beat them once and do better than 0.500 over their remaining games. It seems very unlikely that the Braves lose the division if they win the series with the Phillies.

Jesse Chavez is starting for the Braves tonight? He hasn't pitched more than 2 1/3 innings in a game since 2019. If you have a loaded pen, the opener strategy has some validity. If you have the Brave pen, not sure about that plan.

Chavez has been pretty good so far. Probably will try to get three innings out of him then hopefully Touki has his stuff tonight for three more innings before turning over to Matzek, Jackson, and hopefully not Will Smith

Yeah Chavez throws strikes and if you're looking at the playoffs you have Fried, Morton, and Ynoa (hopefully) as legit starters, then who knows. Last night's blowout let Snit use the c-team relievers, Fried pitched 7 the night before so most of the solid bullpen options are rested. Good time for a trial run should we make the postseason and go the bullpen game route.

I don't think you fully understand the opener strategy. Smyly is an ideal choice to piggyback as bulk starter. after an opener. DBacks stacked their lineup with LHH and Smyly was able to exploit that. Of course, knowing Snit he couldn't quite navigate it right as he left Chavez in to hit with a man on to pitch to one more guy.

Phillies lost. Braves will be up between 2 and 3 games in the loss column depending on the results against San Diego.

Starting to feel fairly confident that we’ll get this locked up. A couple days ago I thought we were doomed.

Phillies v. Braves pitching matchups:

Tuesday: Wheeler v. Morton
Wednesday: Nola v. Fried
Thursday: TBD (probably Kyle Gibson) v. Anderson

All games begin at 7:20 EDT. Game 1 will be on Fox Sports 1 (FS1). Game 2 ESPN+ and the Bally Sports networks. Game 3 on Bally alone.

Would be nice to win 2 of those 3 and 1 from the Mets this weekend and avoid altogether the possibility of having to fly to Colorado Monday and play a deciding game (that could then end up meaning a 163rd game on Tuesday.)

Pretty sure that the make up game against the Rockies would be in Atlanta. Crazy to think that the Braves may have to play a make-up game, and then a play-in game after the season ends to clinch the NL East.

at least they will avoid Dodgers/Cards in 1st round of playoff if they clinch. I much prefer the Brewers to those options

Bump. Tonight is massive. Win against Wheeler and that's pretty much all she wrote. Can definitely survive a loss as well with more favorable pitching matchups the next two.

Braves magic number is 5.

Sweep clinches the title. Taking 2 of 3, essentially clinches title as the Braves would only need to win one of its remaining 4 games (all at home: 3 v. the Mets; 1 v. Rockies); and the Phillies would need to win out. Even just winning 1 of 3 would still leave the Phillies 1.5 back with 3 to play (Phillies finish with the Marlins). FWIW, think Wheeler deals tonight, but like the Braves matchups on Wednesday and Thursday.

Just need to win one of next 2 and all but over as we just need one more W or one Phillies loss. Given pitching matchups and after beating Wheeler would be a big letdown if lose next 2.

Swanson with big 2 out hit to make it a 5 run game. 6 outs away from cutting magic # to uno.
