2019 Wake Spring Football

I think Newman has clearly delivered more in actual game action but certainly understand Clawson wanting to encourage a vigorous competition in fall camp and not wanting to let Jamie feel like he’s already won the job.

The official word seems to be that Hartman started because Newman was injured. If that’s the case, neither player has beat out the other.

And Newman started the last four games because Hartman got injured.

Let the competition continue into the summer and may the best QB win the starting job.

Newman at his best has been better than Hartman at his best so far. If Newman continues to play at the same level (or raises it) that he played at the end of last year, little doubt that he will start game 1 and continue to start for as long as he is healthy. That said, Clawson isn't going to name Newman the starter now; Newman has to show that he is continuing to put in the work that got the offense going last year. Clawson knows to how keep his players motivated and makes sense to keep the competition going and to ensure that both are sharp and playing their best.

If Newman continues to play at the same level (or raises it) that he played in 3 of his 4 starts, that's in Heisman Trophy 1st Team All-American level. Couldn't do much better.

If he played the way he did in his final four, he would finish the year with around 3,000 yards, 27 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and 9 rushing touchdowns. Pretty decent and would be a great year for a Wake QB. Especially if he led us to a surprising year.

Yeah. No.

I just took a look at his stats and was more impressed than expected.

On 3rd down he was 22-30 with 4 touchdowns and no picks. That's a rating of 199.4 per ESPN.

Wait, so Newman is the next Cam Newton and he's going to lead us to a win over 'Bama? We must be going to the CFP this year!

The Athletic just posted their in-depth review of the state of the Wake football program. It’s well done.

Helpful little chart

Haven't gotten to read it yet, but I think it's worth it's own thread.
