Travel Photo Thread

personally, i'm consistently disappointed in iphone pics in anything less than optimal conditions; for a once in a lifetime (presumably) trip to Brazil and WC, I'd shell out a couple hundo for a camera, though you'll probably want to move your price point up to like $300. if you're careful, you could probably buy it at a best buy, use it for the trip and return it in the 30 day window

Heading down to Brazil this summer for the World Cup. Planning to take a few pics while I'm there. I currently do not have a camera other than what's on my iPhone 5s. Should I pick up a cameras for around 150.00-200.00 or just roll with what's on my phone? Any recommendations for a good camera in that price range? Thanks

Depends on how you want to use the pictures. The limitations of the phone will become apparent as you get further away, though if you're in the upper areas of a soccer arena, a point and shoot isn't going to make that big of a difference either. You're left with deciding what's most convenient for you based on how you're going to consume the photos you take.

iPhone only is a great option if you can accept the limitations. There are plenty of apps that allow you to edit, apply filters, and then print directly from the phone (Mosiac and Print Studio come to mind). It can be a fun/challenging way to capture pictures if you're into it.

If you're interested in a camera, at the price point you asked about, just look at amazon reviews (capabilities across cameras in that price range will be very similar). Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Nikon and Olympus are all going to have good options available to you under $200.

Personally for an event like the World Cup I'd stick with a compact pocket camera, but you can still do better than the iPhone. Maybe look at a used Canon Powershot S110 on ebay or something like that. If you don't think you'll use it much after your trip you can always resell it.

In the stadium shots are not really what I'm after, I'll leave that to the professionals.

Just looking for something that I can take out of my pocket while walking around, snap a pic, then put it online when I get back to the states. A waterproof camera or a camera that has the option for a waterproof case add on would be cool since I'm going to be doing a diving trip or two, but is not necessary.

the waterproof case for the s110 is more than the camera, brand new. haha so definitely pass on the water proof comment above

if you want waterproof and are looking to spend around $2-300, buy a GoPro.

I bought a Canon SX280 HS that has 20x optical zoom before Christmas. It's a great compact camera. I got it for right at $200.
