gorgeous.

realized i still haven't added any of my pics from crater lake this fall; i'll do that tonight if i think about it.

Looking to buy a new camera and am struggling between a DSLR (Nikon5600) or mirrorless (Sony A6000). Anyone have strong feelings on this? Mirrorless obviously smaller and lighter, but the DSLR seems to be more user friendly and touchscreen/optical viewfinder are nice features. Photo quality wise they seem pretty comparable. Does this basically come down to personal preference?

I have a Sony A5100 mirrorless that I really enjoy. It has the touch screen, but no view finder, which can make composing in bright sunlight a bit of a challenge at times. I'm fine with it though, and the quality is good. Keep in mind that it isn't full frame, so depending on what you are looking to do, DSLR might better suit your needs. The size of the Alpha and ability to easily take it hiking or more easily on other travels is what works for me.

I believe the newest Alpha (A6500) has both touch and a view finder, along with a more advanced auto focus. It would probably be worth the extra cost, or at least a look. I'm sure people far better than me will steer you towards DSLR, but just wanted to throw my experience in here since you asked about the Sony.

Here are a few shots from a trip this past January in a few different lighting situations and with a few different lenses with the A5100. Lens choice makes a big difference here.

Yes; the two cameras you mention have nearly identical technical specs (sensor size, resolution, etc.). It's going to come down to smaller differences like advanced features (Nikon > Sony), lens options (Nikon > Sony), Size & Weight (Sony > Nikon). Both cameras are great options.

Thanks guys. Might see if I know someone at work with similar models to test out a bit before I jump into one or the other. Tempted to go with the DSLR since i have a pretty solid compact if I need something super portable, but i also don't want to buy a new camera and have it sit at home because I don't want to carry it all the time.

Some great photos there PM.

Call BH. They have experts on each camera they sell. We went to the NYC store for my wife's camera and she ended up with a similar version of the Sony you listed. They were great at walking us through everything.

I was on vacation the first two weeks of this month in Montana and Wyoming. I'll post more pictures soon but loved this one of Saint Mary Lake in Glacier National Park.
