KP - Report Duke Blue Devils - Tuesday ESPN 7 pm

The one constant is that Fusion Dad always has bad takes. This poster is amazing. Being always wrong is almost as hard as being always right.

Take your "rec League Daddy Knowell" experience home to share with the other neighborhood mommies and daddies. Maybe you'll get a participation award for bringing the juice boxes and orange slices. Who knows, maybe you're one of those uber cool dads who coach his kid, wear a uni on the sideline, and NEVER SHUT UP. What you are for sure is a self important band wagon moron who has no idea what you're watching and gets a rush from being a wanna be expert on an anonymous message board. It makes you feel important to critique other people when you don't understand their ideas or point of view, especially since you never have an idea of your own or don't have the stones to share one. I'm sure NOBODY, except you, truly gives a shit about anything you say on this board.

IF Manning had a timeout, not taking it probably resulted in Brandon taking the worst possible shot. Wake did not need a three to win.

I would bet that with 7 seconds left, the ball under your own basket, and a one point deficit, that 99.0% of the coaches in the NCAA would have taken a timeout and designed a play to drive the ball to the basket. This would be a better percentage chance of making a two pointer or drawing a foul. Instead, Wake ran a play away from the basket and jacked up an off-balanced three. A three was the worst shot under the conditions and the blame is entirely on Manning.

If you go back and look at the tape, when Duke's Jack White made the bone-head play and gave us a chance, Randolph immediately turned to Manning and signaled for Manning to call a timeout. Of course, Manning ignored him and we now see the results.

Also, Dino Gaudio had the exact same situation against Duke at the Joel and he called a timeout, set up a play on the baseline, and James Johnson made a layup to win the game. He did not allow Ish Smith to jack up a three point shot.

Manning has to go!

Yep, and UNC showed in the second half of their game with Duke, that the Blue Devil interior defense is practically non existent.

consistently losing games we could and should have been winning - especially at the end - is a Danny Manning trademark and the unmistakable sign of poor coaching

there is no getting around it

I’ve been told that Manning didn’t think he had any timeouts left for the last play. He had 2. Microcosm of Bozo’s 5 years.

I keep seeing this but the broadcast clearly shows Wake only had one. The announcers thought we had zero left as there was some confusion as to who called the timeout after the Barrett basket to put Duke up 3.

We called two timeouts inthe second half if you go back and look at the play-by-play box score. Announcers definitely said we were out. So yeah, he had one timeout left. He definitely should have used it.

Eh. Easy to say that after the fact. We ran a play that we had clearly practiced before, Duke just sniffed it out and had better athletes.

Using anything from our best performance at Cameron Indoor in two decades as a criticism of our coach just seems like a silly exercise. Especially when there is ample material out there condemning his abilities as a head coach at Wake.

Few things.

First, the James Johnson play against Duke is probably the most overrated "genius" coaching call in Wake history. We set up 4 wide down low to try to get Teague free, Duke had 3 guys around Johnson and they all fell asleep as he took a single step to the basket, game over. Just a horrible defensive lapse that had basically nothing to do with the play call for Teague to get the ball on the wing.

Second, considering Duke's pressure, keeping a timeout to bail out a well-defended inbounds play is pretty reasonable. A lot of coaches would do that if they felt they had a play ready for the situation.

Third, the play itself was completely reasonable. High low set, Hoard was playing like garbage so we clear him (and Barrett) out for the inbounds to our biggest and most useless player, Okeke. Okeke hands it off and is supposed to pick Brandon's man so we have the ball back in our PG's hands with 5 seconds plus some mismatches. All that works perfectly. Okeke takes Chill's man completely out of the play on his pick and Reddish has now has to defend both Brown and Chill. This is pretty much exactly the scenario you want a designed play to deliver - a switch you dictated and a single player having to defend your two top scorers of the game.

Then Childress pulls up for a horrible 3, Reddish recovers while he's in the air and he has to fire the double-clutch garbage losing airball. It actually would have been more painful had Chaundee's put-back gone in, only to have it reversed on replay...

The part of the play that didn't work was that Chaundee was supposed to screen Reddish after giving it back to Chill, but that's fine. Watch it again - instead of picking air like Chaundee does and then wandering to the top of the key where Duke's defender is off-screen running back to, that's a dive to the basket and a game winning dunk against nobody.

And that's the story of this season. The players either aren't prepared, aren't performing, are too limited to be effective (Okeke, Smart, Johnson, Wynn), or make bad decisions. All that is Manning's responsibility and he'll get fired for it in a matter of days. We've had bouts of decent basketball in the back half of this season, but that's all it's been. Manning's gift seems to be wrenching defeat from the jaws of victory. Call the right play, execution fails. Recruit some quality players, can't convince them to stay in the program. Beat Louisville to make it to the brink of a real tourney appearance? Lose to a VaTech team you beat 4 days earlier and end up in a play-in.

Perfect response fusion.

I have the following comments on your post:

1. A coach cannot make a shot for a player or make a split-second decision for a player to shoot a three or drive to the basket(as was Brandon's situation). However, the coach has a primary responsibility to give his team the best opportunity to win. Gaudio did that by calling a timeout and designing a play on the baseline that resulted in a winning basket. Manning did the exact opposite and his team lost. Gaudio's play, drawn up and ran on the spot, did work. He was able to call a timeout, calm his team, and take advantage of the situation. Mannning did none of these and for all of the good things Brandon did in the game, his emotions took over and he jacked up an ill-advised three that had no chance. A smart coach would have used the timeout to remind his team that we only needed a two point shot, preferably on a drive to the basket, or foul shots to win the game.

2. I am 80-20 on your idea of keeping the timeout in case we were unable to inbounds the ball. However, it was probably more important to design a better inbounds play and get all of the players on the same page.

3. I totally disagree that the play was reasonable, because it resulted in the worst possible result, a three point shot. The best option, again, would have been a play designed for a drive to the basket. I cannot exactly follow how you describe how Chaundee was supposed to screen on the final play. Duke was switching 1 thru 5 and Reddish switched off Brown to cover Childress. Brown had his back to Reddish and there was no way he could have also screened Reddish on the play. Finally, I do not understand your reference to "mismatches", if we had mismatches, please explain?

4. I agree 110% with your final paragraph, well said.
