Who is a home run hire

Our standards have clearly been skewed over the last ten years. [Redacted] was a three pitch strikeout on an attempted intentional walk and Manning was a poorly executed sacrifice bunt. We’ve forgotten the definition of a home run hire.

Stevens, Few, and Pop are the only home runs on that list. The rest are doubles or triples.
 
One of these things (names) is not like the other...

Popovich wins 5 titles with Duncan, had a 6th in hand (damn you Ray Allen) and also, IIRC, Fisher hit some miracle shot one year to allow the Lakers to beat the Spurs...guys like Stevens and Few are not close to an all-time great like Pop.

He's also the USA Olympic Coach in 2020, so yeah LOL at the list.

If we’re putting an LOL list together, why not put Jay Wright on it?

He’s tired of Villanova and with Roy and K getting old, he could come be the king of the ACC.
 
didn't we all do this on both coaching searches the last decade? granted there is a new AD but hell fire some of the names being thrown around is ridiculous

It's his shtick. He has higher standards than any Wake fan...while claiming that Manning needed more time. He's a riddle, wrapped in mystery, inside of an enigma. Or he's just full of shit and gets off on arguing.

Most schools aren't in the ACC. Most schools don't haven't didn't produced two Hall of Famers and other terrific NBA All Stars over the past twenty-five years.

There should be a VAST difference between the type of people hired Wake versus DePaul or Wake v. Ole Miss.

We shouldn't have to be LOWF. We should aim high and make that shot an open and easy one. Sadly, we have an AD and university president that didn't act that way.

As much as many people would like to believe there is no such thing as the hot hand and for sports to be "scientific", they aren't. You may genuinely feel a deal is done and it falls apart but that's Curry's JOB. If we make the right offer SHAKA is ABSOLUTELY available so long as Hatch doesn't FUCK him again

Never claimed that.

I’d obviously be thrilled with Marshall at this point, but don’t think he’s a home run. If your credentials as a coach are beating up on a shitty conference every year then you better do it every single year and have plenty of NCAA success to show for it.

To me a home run coach is a guy who you would expect to come in and have us routinely in the top 4 of the conference within 4-5 years.

He does do it every year. Marshall has had only 1 losing season in his coaching career and only 2 losing seasons in conference. He has finished in 1st or 2nd place in the conference every year except for 3 years. He has made as many Final Fours in 20 years of coaching as Wake has made in its entire basketball history. In a five year period, he won at least one NCAA Tourney game every year and made the Final Four once and Sweet Sixteen once.

Before all this Marshall put Winthrop in the tourney on a routine basis. So what if Wichita St plays in a shitty conference, the dude got them to a final four and they are usually win at least 1 game in tourney every year.

To me, Marshall is gettable and not a pipe dream. He is still only 55 and I am sure he would like the chance to get it on vs the heavyweights in the conference. All we have to do is fork over the $$$ which shouldn't be a problem considering how much has been wasted in the last 10 years.
 
Can we get a real "home run" poll? Some of the choices are just ridiculous. They're beyond home run hires...they're "ain't never gonna fucking happen so why are we wasting poll votes" hires.

The legit home run hires from this list are only...Matta, Smart, Marshall, Prohm, Weber. No way on Cronin and Chambers. They would barely be doubles...and worse than Oats, imo. Although the KenPom obsessed among us will love them some Pat Chambers...I wonder if we could get him here and finish Top 40 KenPom but be under .500 too. That'd be great!

So not every year.

A home run coach is one that we can be very confident will lead us past the Sweet Sixteen more than once. Marshall would be a great hire. He’s a stand up triple. Not sure why that take is controversial.

If we want the home run from this list above, are we prepared to pony up 3 mil+? If not, why waste our time dreaming and just go get Wes Miller and pay him 1 mil and we'll never sniff the sweet 16.
