Is Zion Done at Duke?

Whereas other players could use the ACCT or NCAAT to promote their "brand", Zion has less than no need to do that. In HS he had millions of followers and has more now.

If he gets hurt, it could cost him $100M+ down the road. If he blows out his knee, his loss in the draft will be nothing compared to losing a second and third NBA contract as well as eight or nine figures in endorsements.

It will be nice for him to have those memories, but are those memories worth risking the frustration an injury would cost him? He has nothing to gain and a lot to lose.

That is a decision he and his parents will need to make. The rumored insurance will make sure he is financially secure for life, even if he never plays another minute. The second and third NBA contracts would take him from there to enormously wealthy. The question is, what is the risk to that potential wealth from playing more college basketball?

I'm surprised he won't play Saturday. I figured K would push him to play so he wouldn't get embarassed by UNC for a second straight game. On the other hand, I guess if Duke loses, their loss won't count and they'll still be a #1 seed in the tournament.

It's one thing to take the risk when you are totally healthy. It's quite another to take that risk when you aren't 100%.

The one-and-done rule is really an NBA rule. To be draft eligible, generally, the player needs to be one year removed from HS. Nothing requires kids to go to college, but it obviously is the preferred path for the vast majority of draft caliber players.

Bingo. People act like these players are forced to play college basketball. You have every right to go overseas and get paid for a year before coming back here to play pro ball.

I wish the NBA would get rid of that stupid rule. It forces kids like ZW to put off getting paid and spend a year playing at a place they're not invested in. It's terrible for CBB. Coaches have to go after one-and-dones but look what it did to Duke. There's absolutely no reason ZW isn't playing this weekend. And it instantly took away any chance of duke winning a championship.

ETA: There is a reason ZW isn't playing, and I don't blame him. Just meant he's healthy enough to go but got scared and isn't willing to risk his draft spot. That's terrible for CBB.

This is the correct take.

Carolina already avoids the one and dones, and recruits those below that level - great, 4 year players. Wouldn't blame ZW for sitting out, but doing so will eventually make more schools follow the Carolina path. The reason to play college ball currently is to improve your market-ability as a pro - be a college legend, a known name, entering the pros. Not sure that is worthwhile though.

So UNC-CH didn't recruit Zion ? Good to know. Fake news.

BTW, Nassir Little was the #2 SF recruit in the nation last year behind Cam Reddish.

Not to say it couldn't happen, but are there any examples of a college BB player suffering a 'catastrophic' injury that significantly impaired their draft status?

Carolina does recruit one and dones, but Roy doesn't like playing a lot of freshmen. Coby White seems to be the exception this year. That, and there really isn't another PG on that team that is better than he is.

You won't what happens to Duke when the NBA gets rid of the one and done deal. K has sold his soul and pretty much stopped coaching these days. Maybe he's close to hanging it up.

People point to Porter last year, who went from a top 5 pick to late lottery. I don't know of someone suffering a big injury, but Zion could easily re-injure himself if he isn't fully healthy. He's 290 points and that's a lot of weight on his knees.

Derek Anderson tore his ACL in late January, almost came back to play in the final four, and was drafted in the teens in June (which is where he was projected before the injury).

Does Zion even give a shit about Duke at all? He’s been there what 6 months maybe? He didn’t grow up a Duke fan or anything he was just looking for a short term landing spot to hang out for 9 months before the NBA.

some of you assume that the only reason these guys play basketball is to make a living. When you watch the guy play, he just loves playing basketball and he wants to win. Just because you, as a 30-50 year old, have seen enough tournaments that you're jaded, that doesn't mean that an 18 year old who loves playing hoops is only focused on his career earning potential.

Harry Giles was the consensus #1 pick before his last injury. He dropped to #19 and his career will never be the same. It doesn't make sense for Zion to take such a risk when there is virtually no reward for playing.

Holy crap RJ, do you not remember the LOL Harry Giles thread? Harry Giles dropped to #19 after people watched him play half a year and realized that he sucked.

His Wikipedia entry:
Before the start of the 2016-17 season, Giles was selected to both Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award preseason watchlist. On October 3, 2016 it was announced Giles would likely miss up to six weeks to have surgery on his knee.[18] On December 19, 2016, Giles made his college debut in a win against Tennessee State. On December 31, 2016 in his ACC debut, Giles scored 4 points and 8 rebounds in a (75-89) loss against Virginia Tech. On January 4, 2017, He recorded his first Double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Georgia Tech. On March 10, 2017 in the ACC Tournament semi-finals against rival North Carolina, Giles had four blocks,7 rebounds, and 6 points in a (95-83) win.

Those are the highlights of his college career, when he was healthy.
