Are you pleased with the direction of Wake Forest under Hatch

Wake's tuition expense is part of a larger problem of private schools becoming unattainable for middle and even upper middle class people. That is a debate for another day.

And another debate over whether the ROI for a private university is really worth it nowadays.

Yep. Is Wake an institution of higher learning or a place where children of wealth can have fun and get credentials? That's a question for private elite universities across the board.

Hatch definitely has benefitted from riding Hearn's coattails to some extent.

The biggest negative during his term has been the elimination of need-blind admissions. The admissions process shouldn't be seen as a driver of funding, but unfortunately, that's what it has become.

The next president of Wake Forest should be a woman, preferably also a women from a minority background who overcame economic obstacles to reach the upper echelon of the ivory tower. She should consider herself either a socialist or a libertarian, because simply aligning yourself with Democratic or Republican is too basic. We don't need some basic chick running the show. We need academia's version of Cardi B to lead Wake Forest University into the next century. Okurrr!

The WFU campus is gorgeous (other than the Scales Fine Arts building) but drove through the UNC Charlotte campus yesterday while at ACCT. It’s amazingly nice. Hard to believe, really. The place was a dump back in the day.

While this is true, Wake has been on a 30+ year journey of concerted, admitted, purposeful efforts to increase tuition into the same realm as its self-identified 'peers'.

On a personal level Hatch is a pretty arrogant guy. He definitely has his headshot framed on the table on his side of the bed. He probably kisses it each night as he turns off the lamp. Yes I've had two fairly long (20 minutes or so) personal conversations with the guy at Wake events and he just seems like an asshat.

But he's done a decent job at Wake and it sounds like the day-to-day impact of the expansion and improvements on the community is incredible. Winston certainly needed that.

It's weird that Wake has basically been stagnate in national academic rankings through his tenure given the expansion of programs and improved facilities. I hope Wake isn't doing that humble southern thing and not showing off/promoting the fact that is truly a University now, rather than an excellent regional college posing as a Uni like it was in the 1990's. What is holding us back from getting into the high teens (top 20) in the rankings? We've never made that jump to my knowledge and have stuck around 25-28 in USNWR for 15 years or more.

When was need blind admission eliminated. Is shows up all over the google as still being used.

The gap between what Wake calls those in "need" and what upper middle income households with a few kids can actually "afford" is pretty damn big, sadly.

We lost our way when we allowed dancing IMO

When I was at Wake in the 60's we danced anyway. (Drank too!) We just didn't admit it.

Hey, Hatch must have done something right. We're elite now. People are paying bribes to get their kids to go to Wake. :dancindeac:

And yesterday’s news was a landmark in that effort. Somebody essentially paid double for their kid to get a Wake education.

On a serious note, there's no doubt Wake's academic reputation has gotten stronger in the last thirty years or so. I think Hearn gets a lot of credit for that, but Hatch gets some too. For that all of us alums should be grateful.

As an semi-old, I have some of the same gripes the rest of you do. I worry about whether growing the student body is really the right move. I also don't think Wake has done much if anything to show leadership on the problem of the cost of higher ed. There's way too much administrative bloat. Of course Wake is in good company with nearly every other private school out there in dealing with these challenges.

I think they are addressing this. Hatch's single greatest accomplishment, imo, is Wake Will. A large portion of that is going to fund financial aid. My wife and I do pretty well...solidly upper middle class. The financial aid package from Wake for our daughter made the cost a few thousand more than Carolina for us. We told our kids we can afford public school and beyond that it will depend on financial aid and scholarships. When all was said and done Wake provided a viable option. I think if your kids are approaching college age, don't shutdown the private schools as options...they have money and are willing to spend it on financial aid and/or scholarship $. Does it still need to be more affordable? Yes. But it is not off limits to middle class families due to changes in financial aid and resources the school has accumulated under Hatch.

It's very hard to move up in those rankings - you have to pass somebody and those are all really good schools that are also working to expand programs and improve facilities.
