Oates to Bama

Does anyone here truly think we would've been able to outspend Bama for a coach? Not only that, but Bama's program probably looks better too in terms of current roster and facilities. The only reason Oats would've chosen Wake is because he preferred to be at a non-football school, location, etc. Wake would've been more competitive had we not had this lost decade.

I couldn't disagree more. Even today with our BB Program and reputation in shambles, Wake is much better job than Bama in all aspects. As far as $$, there is no reason in the world we couldn't match Bama and their basketball program dollar for dollar. If Manning was shown the door as he should of been, we could of landed Oates.

Will be interested to see how he does there.

Based the board hype you would have thought UCLA would be calling...

He easily would have accepted WF offer. Sad!

Oats strikes me as the type of guy who would want to go against the best. He would probably have enjoyed going up against Kaye and Roy.

Wake had a decent roster coming back as well. If the numbers were close, he likely chooses Wake.

I think Wake probably could spend as much as Alabama was willing to spend. With the new Shah center, we will probably have them beat for basketball facilities as well. Furthermore, they've snagged pretty big coaching names the last two go-arounds and don't have a lot to show for it. The only time they've had consistent success over the last 30 years was when Gottfried was there doing his Gottfried things (also - they weren't that successful - three winning conference records in eleven years).

They have more money as an athletic department, but basketball is not a priority for them like it is / should be at Wake.

IIRC, Alabama was negotiating a buyout of their current coach, made it public they were negotiating said buyout, got that done, then went and got the best mid-major/fast-riser on the market. And we stuck with a guy who is 65-93 and 24-66 in league play.

Exactly. This hire should prove that we certainly could have hired Oates - but we would rather stick with who brung us (to the depths of hell).

Alabama has consistently one of the biggest revenue generating athletic departments in the NCAA. From the available information, Wake Athletics probably make about $100 million less per year than Alabama.

VPI will go McKay, Alexander or Miller IMO. Reach is Matta who will still interview somewhere (has to in order to get paid as others have mentioned)

But all of that money goes to Saban and his $100M/year contract.

Yeah, but Saban's real pay is $97M...

They're a rich school but they've gone too far and got the coach that we weren't signing anyway. We can't rely on Mit Shah's money, we can't rely on Mit Shah's money.

The real question is if Alabama is so rich in athletics, why has their bball program never been any good? It's been a graveyard for pretty decent coaches.
