Official 2019 MLB Regular Season Thread - Trade Deadline Wednesday

baseball fans, in light of Carter Stewart going to Japan and the upcoming labor negotiations, what are you hoping to see in the next MLB-MLBPA contract?

MLPBPA will be looking to lower the time for team control after a player makes the bigs. It's currently at 6 years, which takes the average MLB player close to 30 when they hit FA, and MLB teams aren't giving 30+ year-olds fat long term deals now. Players will probably ask to drop the team control to 4 and they may settle at 5. MLB PA will also want to tweak the arbitration rules to accelerate players ability to seek arbitration after making the bigs. MLBPA seek to significantly raise the minimum salary to lower the cost/benefit ratio of using minimum salary rookies versus vets.

MLBPA will also look to significantly raise the luxury tax threshold, add a spending floor requiring teams to have a payroll of above a threshold amount to prevent teams like the Marlins from having a $30 million payroll and end the draft pick compensation for high level free agents.

The agents will also want the MLBPA to significantly raise the slot money for MLB draft and for international free agents.

MLB will be willing to concede on some of these issues (they don't like losing draft eligible players to Japan) to reach a deal (MLB will also ask the players to sign on to additional pace of game issues, playing more games overseas and related issues that MLB perceives as long-term health of the game stuff).

Seems like any fan would be behind a plan that tries to pay players when they're most valuable and helps teams avoid paying monster contracts to guys in their mid to late 30s. I can't imagine there's anyone outside of the Blue Jays' FO that saw Vlad Jr. in AAA and though "yeah, that's a good thing".

Kyle Freeland.

From 4th in Cy Young voting to Triple AAA in a handful of months.

What's his name from Oregon State is supposed to be the second coming.

Also Jay Bruce to the Phillies is complete. Are the M's giving up already?

Twins have plenty of payroll flexibility to add Kimbrel and/or Kuechel. Rays do as well. Braves and Phillies are expected to be in on the bidding too. Dodgers are already positioning for post-season, and Kimbrel could be helpful for their pen.

For months, Orioles drafting Adley Rutchman (catcher Oregon State) #1 seemed like a done deal, but there have been rumors that the Orioles may be considering Bobby Witt Jr. (son of the former MLB pitcher) Witt, a HS player in Texas, is a SS with power and speed.

That's a lot of money to pay an over-the-hill, bench player.

Draft is going as expected so far. Don’t know who enjoys these pointless interviews. I just want to watch the picks.

^^^MLB doing its level best to make their draft an "event" like NFL and NBA.

Problem for baseball is that even the most highly regarded players won't be in the majors for a few years. In football and basketball, top level draftees play right away, some start and some become stars as rookies. Meanwhile, the top picks in the baseball draft are lucky to reach AA level by the end of their first year.
