Official 2019 MLB Regular Season Thread - Trade Deadline Wednesday

Mickey Callaway went from "first guy fired" to possible MOY candidate. Baseball is weird.

Fangraphs WC matchups right now are Rays@Indians and Mets@Nationals, with LAD, HOU, and NYY all north of 103 wins.

Yankees hit the milestone of 200 consecutive games with them having at least one run scored. Fourth longest such streak in history.

Phillies fired their hitting coach because they have been bad at hitting since the all star break.

They brought back their former manager, Charlie Manuel, as interim hitting coach for the remainder of the season.

Pretty much lose-lose for Kapler. If they turn it around, Manuel gets the credit. If they continue to suck hard ass, Kapler gets the blame.

Manuel to the Phillies this year reminds me of Childress as an assistant coach. Hopefully the Phillies version won't be used to gloss over a decade of underachievement.

Except that Manuel is a very accomplished and well respected hitting coach. And he was already with the organization.

Mallee had to go. Under his tenure players got worse when they came to the Phillies and better when they left. Manuel is temporary until they can bring someone else in during in the offseason.

Astros lose their 2nd game this year as the biggest favorite since 2007

You would think 11 runs would be enough to win a baseball game against a so-so team. But nope, not when your pitching staff gives up 19.

Good thing the balls aren't juiced this year. Hard to tell what the score might have been.

Glass reportedly in talks to sell the Royals for 1 billion. Bought the team for 96 million.

Jon Morosi reports industry execs believe Strasburg is likely to opt out of current deal.

Are the five teams in the NL pretty much decided? Cubs have an easy schedule the rest of the way, minus a home and home with the Cardinals. Nats have a five-gamer against the Phillies, but Philly clearly doesn't have the pitching to keep them in it. Nats have a weird season-ending series against Cleveland, which could have more implications for the AL than the NL.

Looking like the key regular season race will be for the two WC spots between Cleveland, Tampa and Oakland. Those three are within a game and half of each other. BTW, the A's and Rays are just amazing. The Rays are DFL in MLB payroll this year at $62 million (yes, less than the no account Marlins, Orioles and Tigers), and the A's are #25 at $93 million. FWIW, the Red Sox (their starting rotation is significantly higher than the Rays entire payroll) have the highest payroll at $228 million and are likely to miss the playoffs. The Cubs are second at $218 million and they may barely get in.

D-backs could climb into the NL wildcard picture, particularly if the Dodgers go on cruise control the last 20 games.
