Official 2019 MLB Regular Season Thread - Trade Deadline Wednesday

Shane Greene has been a treat this season. 13 for 13 on saves with a 1.69 ERA in 15 IP. Big reason the Tigs are where they are, which is to say not in last place. Plus the system is starting to look decent with Mize and Faedo looking solid.

Giants just brought up Diamond Deac Mac Williamson. The Giants have yo-yo'd him from AAA each of the last 5 seasons.

Also, the Red Sox, Nats and Mets are a collective: 4-18 in when Sale, Scherzer and DeGrom start. One of those 4 wins was DeGrom over Scherzer. So, when they aren't facing each other those 3 aces are 3-17 against the rest of league. Weird.

You probably could have gotten some pretty high odds on the three collectively being under .200 winning for the first month of the season. If they continue on current trends, it will be a very strong argument for GMs who don't want to sign pitchers to long term contracts.

How long can the Nats persist with Dave Martinez? Hard to imagine anyone else is getting less out of his personnel

Mike Fiers no hit the Reds last night. Second of his career. Laser Ramon continued his spectacular play in center, robbing Votto of a homer in the 6th.

The Nats have dealt with a lot of injuries, but to be honest there hasn't been anything since he started that would make me think he can figure it out. Everything he's emphasized since he's got here (namely, fundamentals and playing error-free baseball) the Nats have gotten worse at.

Pitching has been a big problem for Nats. Scherzer particularly among the starters and Trevor Rosenthal in the bullpen.

Maddux leaving as pitching coach may have been as important as Dusty Baker being fired.

Max seems fine. WHIP is a little high but FIP is lowest of his career, and his K rate seems great as usual. His W-L record with his other numbers should probably be attributed to pen and lack of run support.

The Nationals combined bullpen ERA is 6.41. And their 4th and 5th starters have been terrible so far. There is a lot of talented hitters on the team, would assume the gel at some point and right the ship, but I don't think they have any shot of keeping pace in that division.

The bullpen killed the Nats in April, but they were able to stay around .500 until the injuries stacked up.

For most of the current losing skid, the Nats have been playing without their 2,3,4,5 hitters on opening day. Then, some of the back-ups got hurt. The Nats have been batting Kurt Suzuki in the clean-up spot and been starting players who weren't on their 40 man roster when the season started. They are trying to win with a Grapefruit League B Squad. Players are starting to return. Rendon was activated Tuesday, Soto is expected to play on Saturday, and Trea Turner possibly by the end of next week.

The bullpen is better than they have shown; the lineup will produce runs when their core returns. All that said, the division was going to be tight if they stayed healthy. The Nats aren't good enough to spot everyone in the division a lead. All of these losses count, and don't see them being able to make up the ground lost, but they aren't as bad as the record indicates.

Davey Martinez will probably survive the season, but not the off-season, if they don't make the playoffs.

This stat is hard to believe: only the Marlins, Orioles and Royals have fewer wins the Nats right now, and the Nats play 4 against the Dodgers in LA (where they have won 10 straight) this weekend. Pretty good chance that the Marlins will be the only MLB team with fewer wins than the Nats by Sunday. Pretty amazing considering, in 2017, the Nats fired Dusty Baker after 95 and 97 win seasons thinking Davey Martinez was going to get them over the hump. They can't even get to the camel's arse right now.

Albert Pujols became the 5th guy in MLB history last night with 2000 career RBIs. He is also one of only 3 players with the combination of 2000 RBIs, 600 HR, and 3000 hits. Incredible hitter. He hit at least 30 HR, drove in at least 100 runs, and hit over .300 his first ten years in the league.

He got us over the hump.

I’d take Albert because of his better power numbers. But it’d be close. They’re both great hitters.

Miggy is the best hitter I’ve ever seen (as a Tiger fan) but Pujols is objectively better. In two more seasons he has like 20 more career WAR.
