Reparations

Chinese should get reparations for the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the Naturalization Act of 1870. If we are extending reparations systematic oppression outside of slavery.

Also there is that whole thing where it is harder for our children to get higher education.

GTFO with that garbage.

Why is it garbage? I'd agree that most liberal whites are in favor, or at least open-minded, to paying reparations. But white Republicans? Of the 22 minority rookie representatives elected to the House last year, only one was a Republican. There are 94 minority Democratic members of the House and Senate, and only 16 Republicans. Two-thirds of all GOP members of Congress are white men over 50, less than 40% of Congressional Democrats fit that category. That's not exactly the sign of a party or group of people that favors diversity. And it's not even including the largest minority group, women. The number of Republican women in the House dropped a whopping 43% from 2018 to 2019, from 23 Republican women in the House to just 13. Whatever else it may stand for, the GOP definitely isn't a party that represents demographic diversity in its leadership and congressional membership in any form.

right, but why the comment here?

Pearls are being clutched over practical issues that presumably will be studied by the bill proposed. Saying, “but it’s impractical!!!” is a weird response to a hearing for a bill to fund empirical study of the issue at hand.

I never claimed it was. Any other straw man you want to do battle with?

You claimed that reparations (or giving money to wealthy black people) would play well in certain academic circles. It’s a dumb point. Take the L.

Take the L over something that is the absolute truth that you misinterpreted? No thanks.

What did I misinterpret?

What academic circles have you witnessed celebrating the idea that wealthy black peoples (who are themselves the children of wealth) would receive reparations? I’ll wait.

The architects of most of the serious reparations proposals, for example, would disagree with your characterization.

Like the baby bond proposal you said was brilliant that would give minorities $500 regardless of their position on the economic ladder? Like that one?

It would give all minorities $500!? That’s news to me.

We probably should study the issue more if this is the best you’ve got.

This is the problem with Americans. We don’t know our own damn history...

So, now that Japanese residents have been paid reparations, are we allowed to *study* whether African American residents can be paid reparations?

Lol sorry I didn’t know that, my bad bro.

Yeah this just isn't true. Reparations have around a 25% support rate among Americans. meaning that among democrats it is still not very popular.

It would give all black people who turn 18 $500 regardless of economic position. Is that not the case?

How about we let black people operate casinos ? For some reason that seemed reasonable for Native Amercans.

Just give them a big chunk of some industry.

But it is definitely more acceptable among white liberals than white conservatives. An April 2019 NY Times article said that a plurality of white liberals support reparations, 38 to 30.5 percent, with the rest being undecided. That's low for liberals, but still a plurality. No doubt overall the great majority of whites oppose reparations, as does a plurality of Hispanics and around 35% of African-Americans (with 58% supporting), according to a 2016 Marist poll.

Black people already own 100% of the NBA franchises in the Carolinas and Virginias.
