Reparations

I'm very surprised the RJ hasn't posted the Chris Rock video about rims.

We should let them dominate professional athletics !

Junebug, what's your solution for addressing government sponsored racism aside from mostly white billionaires drafting and owning some black millionaires?

You can’t pay individuals. Dedicated investments in schools and workforce training would be a great idea.

That's nice, but the first step would be to stop government policy that purposefully disenfranchises minorities.

I feel like giving every individual $500 is kind of insulting. Like, hey, your country enslaved your ancestors and has been systematically oppressing your race for more than a century. Here, go buy a new tv. Or pay a single month of rent.

Although the $500 might have been something random someone on here made up, I'm not sure the amount matters too much. Even a more substantial sum would barely dent a student loan debt or a couple of years of school.

Sounds like the government should do some investigating and discussing.

+1 Maybe the government offers to pay for higher education or a trade school if you accomplish x and y and don't do z.

So a scholarship program for the kids who overcome the unjust burdens of society we are trying to stop.

I’m sorry. I was answering the question about paying reparations. I missed the thread on solutions for disenfranchising minority communities.

I'm going to assume this is a good faith statement because you seem to be a good guy. Feel free to prove me differently in your response.

There are three dictionary definitions of "reparation" according to Merriam-Webster:

[h=2]Definition of reparation[/h]

1a : a repairing or keeping in repair
b reparations plural : repairs

2a : the act of making amends, offering expiation, or giving satisfaction for a wrong or injury
b : something done or given as amends or satisfaction

3 : the payment of damages : indemnification specifically : compensation in money or materials payable by a defeated nation for damages to or expenditures sustained by another nation as a result of hostilities with the defeated nation —usually used in plural

For the most part, scholars and activists are talking about #1. How to we repair the legacy of slavery? #2 and #3 are methods of accomplishing it. #3 is a common method because it's easy. Just pay people. Cav, in this conversation, conservatives love to talk about #3 because they want you to think that government is going to take money from your pocket and give it to some lazy, shiftless Negro who doesn't deserve it simply based on something that happened a long time ago. Most importantly, this perspective doesn't require anything to actually change.

How about we let black people operate casinos ? For some reason that seemed reasonable for Native Amercans.

Just give them a big chunk of some industry.

I'm not a fan of reparations, but if we were going to do it I like this idea the best. Given the fact that our drug policy has disproportionately harmed minorities, we could ensure that a percentage of the licenses for legal marijuana businesses be reserved for descendants of slaves.

You need to think bigger. Now we’ve moved on to fixing “the unjust burdens of society.”

Do try to keep up.

Junebug, what do you have to add to the conversation? You're just trolling. What's your solution?

"So, he’s crafted massive solutions. A “baby bonds” proposal, which would provide a child, upon her turning eighteen, a trust fund with anywhere from $500 to $50,000 based on her family’s position on the economic ladder. A federal jobs guarantee that would eliminate involuntary unemployment and provide workers health insurance and non-poverty wages."

$500 in the low end apparently regardless of wealth.

yeah junebug, unlike facebook this message board shit is serious

I already posted the first step.

You must be lost. This isn’t the white supremacy thread. I guess it’s hard to see with the hood and all, but do try to keep up.

I assume you're referring to this.

That's nice, but the first step would be to stop government policy that purposefully disenfranchises minorities.

And that would be nice, but that's really more of a matter of following the law. And if minorities voted at just a little bit higher rate they'd be able to largely put an end to theier systematice disenfranchisement.
