Danny Manning replacement search thread

Unless Currie has an IQ that is under 50, there is absolutely no chance that Manning coaches out his contract, barring some miraculous performance change (which ain't going to happen.)

Manning coaching out his contract would seem to defy logic, but we’ve all seen stranger things happen.

I know some people think Manning can suck another year and no change will be made in March 2020, but I really doubt that. Letting him stay after another losing season this year will be too much of a stain on Wake Forest Athletics. The Joel will be empty this year as is, and even if the AD doesn't care about the lost revenue on ticket sales, the ACC Network won't be interested in broadcasting games of an empty Coliseum and a team full of players that can't compete in the ACC.

Stain on Wake Forest athletics? Empty Joel? Lost revenue? Broadcasters won't want to show our games? Players can't compete?

We're there. We've been there for years and nothing's been done about it.

What coach, worth his salt, would even want to come here. He would be facing an unsupportive president, a virtual empty coliseum(although attendance publications would be 12,000 per game), a perennial bottom dweller with little talent, and an unknown, untested AD.

I'm impressed by the optimism of some that think Manning would actually be fired after another horrid season, with all (limited) evidence to the contrary. If the blue hairs and big donors and decision makers weren't disturbed enough to enact change after last season, one more isn't going to change anything for the people whose opinions actually matter.

Meanwhile the last remaining few dozen fans just spin their figurative wheels or check out altogether.

It's football season baby!

Truth. Retaining Manning for this upcoming season is proof there is no commitment to winning in basketball. There was zero upside to keeping him.

The season will be abysmal but the real damage was the 100% foreseeable inability to recruit with a walking dead coach.

To anyone considering playing college basketball, Wake has been the worst program in the ACC for their entire memory.

Utah State was 1 coach removed from being a consistent 20+ win team

Matt McMahon is a good recruiter and a good X's and O's guy:

Came up under Steve Prohm and has made coaching watch lists for 7 years.

Utah State is historically a pretty good program no doubt. Murray State is too.

But, Utah State had never won more than 18 games since joining the Mountain West. In Smith's first year, they won 28. It took McMahon 4 years to get there, while coaching in an easier conference and taking over a program that had won 29 games the year before he was hired. At South Dakota, Smith took over a program that had been in D1 for 6 years, added 5 games to the win total in his first year, and took them to 22 and 26 his 3rd and 4th years.

Also, per your other post, McMahon's first conference regular season title came when the OVC was still split in divisions. 4 teams in the other division had more conference wins than Murray State.

This is spot on. This years basketball team will most likely win between 9-13 games. That is what is expected by fans and most likely the AD. Doing so will meet expectations and allow Manning to keep his job. Our basketball program isn't focused on winning any longer. The goal is to run a clean program, stay out of the headlines for negative reasons, and maintain status quo. As long as we are doing this Manning is going to coach out his contract at 3mil per season.

Yes, so obvious. Get use to it. Football is our future.

ESPN runs the ACC now, and they care about football. Basketball is important for some, but not in Winston-Salem anymore.

If this year's team has double-digit wins they'll dramatically exceed my expectations.

The title of this thread made me think that my wish for DM's departure had occurred.

Anyone know the record for the most 20 loss seasons by a college basketball coach during their tenure at one university?

No idea but 10 or fewer wins puts Manning under .400 at Wake overall. 3 or fewer ACC wins puts him under .250 in conference play.

I doubt there has been a 6 year ACC coach with a record that bad.

What’s funny (sad) is that his numbers are terrible AND that includes an NCAA First Four year.

The other years have been complete dogshit.

Yeah, but according to RChill, Manning was ahead of schedule. He earned more time!!!!???!!! KENPOM SAID SO! No logical person could have looked at the results and determined that Manning would be one of the worst coaches ever...well, except for many of us "fringe lunatic" types.

Met or exceeded expectations each of the first 3 years!!!

Yeah but it’s easy to predict failure so it doesn’t matter if you’re right.

Manning is gone after this year if he doesn't win 15+ games IMO.

I understand cynicism given what Wake has been through the last decade but this type of post is just bullshit.
