Danny Manning replacement search thread

I like Dino and am sorry things played out the way they did for him at Wake. But there were signs of trouble even apart from whatever went on behind the scenes that made RW pull the trigger when he did. The Cleveland State loss still stands as one of the most embarrassing moments in WF sports history. That loss was to Dino what the Butler fiasco was to Odom.

I was in Vegas at a Wake Forest bachelor party during the Cleveland State loss. It started off as one of the worst trips ever. We were all decked out in Wake gear for the game. Instead of watching at a sportsbook we got stuck in some overflow conference room sitting around at wedding style tables with the game being shown on a projection screen. After Wake lost we were ruthlessly heckled by people who lost money on Wake or had their brackets busted by Wake. Weekend was saved by the father of the bride hitting a 42k high stakes video poker royal flush. This was at like 2AM and he found the few of us on the casino floor who were still awake and was handing out $100 chips like candy. Small consolation prize for the 2nd or 3rd most painful Wake hoops loss I can remember. Getting Pittsnoggled was #1, being live in the front row for Wake / St Joes was up there as well.

Wonder if Childress will be around next year for the hopeful new coach. I could see Wellman asking Currie to keep him around.

New coach gets to hire his own staff.
Childress needs to be given a job somewhere else in the Athletic Department. Far away from the basketball program.

That sucks. What hotel/casino was that?

It would be a very Wellman thing to force a new coach to keep on the least experienced and losingest assistant coach we've ever had. Hopefully Currie shows himself to not be another Wellman.

the guy has to feel like a loser by now right? just retaining his job based on his name despite the results year in and year out?

I thought his pride and will to win would have kicked in a long time ago. Surprised to find out he's just a company man.

I'm hoping for Rhoades. Maybe we can get Josh Howard as our DBO. I'm assuming that's a step up over head coach at Piedmont University.

For his sake, I wish Chill would announce he was leaving for an assistant job somewhere else - hopefully at a good program with a great head coach mentor - as soon as the season is over and before Manning is canned (assuming he gets canned). If he wants to stay in coaching he needs to go get experience somewhere else from someone who knows what they are doing.

Rhoades would be a solid choice based on how few candidates will be interested in the job (when and if it's opening following the 2019-20 season). We're not going to be able to offer much in the way of compensation based on Coach Manning's buyout. Rhoades' experience at Rice is a plus in terms of dealing with academic expectations.

Short memories on this board....none of the candidates proffered on the board in quite a while has the track record for recruiting, or winning in the ACC like Dino Gaudio does. He may not be on anybody's flavor of the moment list, and isn't a sexy option, but now that Wellman's gone, I'd send somebody up to see him, get on their knees, beg forgiveness, and make him an offer he can't refuse. I'd take him in a heartbeat over just about anybody mentioned in the last two years because Dino knows how to coach two things every good team does, play defense, and rebound.

You want Wake to hire a Louisville assistant coach?

If Dino was such a good coach, why hasn't he gotten a job in nine years?

Fusiondad with another shit take.

Anthony Grant at Dayton doing incredible work this year. Third year as head coach. First season was 14-17, last year was 21-12, this year has 20+ point victories over Georgia and VA Tech, and then a 4 point OT loss to Kansas. Add him to the list.

Honestly, Anthony Grant is probably my top choice right now.

The Alabama years aren't a red flag for me. Seems like he's a high floor guy with perhaps a lower ceiling than some candidates with less of a record.

Exactly. I don't think too many had an issue with firing Dino. It was the moronic decisions following that which led us to our demise. The hiring of bozo (most Wake fans said, "Who?!"). The retaining of bozo after 2 years. Then again after 3 years. All along Wellman is pretty much telling the fan base how stupid and clueless they are. Then the hiring of bozo no. 2 after only 2 years as a head coach. Then keeping bozo no. 2 after year 4 and 5 despite him essentially having four 20 loss seasons. After Dino, it was the cluster fuck of decisions and spin from the Athletic Department that led us into an abyss that I don't know if we will ever be fortunate enough to escape.

He'd be on my list right now

I'd still have Rhoades at #1, but probably Grant at #2, Steve Forbes #3, Wes Miller #4, Gonzaga's top assistant at #5.

grant has only made the tourney in 3 of 11 years of coaching and he has coached at 3 places that are no strangers to making it to march madness.
