Danny Manning replacement search thread

We need a turnaround specialist who can get the program on solid ground. We are too far gone for an inexperienced coach.

I'd settle for the basketball version of Herm Edwards. Jeff Van Gundy anyone?

we need a good coach. the rest will take care of itself.

Certainly.
If you are Currie, who are the six or seven names you have on your list of good coaches that you're looking at?

I take the UNCC coach, a product of Tony Bennett, in a heartbeat over Manning.....

Sanchez at UNCC looks promising but if it came to it, Ritchie McKay would be the Bennett disciple who would be my "safety" pick. He's older, but would do a good job.

Of course you'd start with trying to get LaVall Jordan, Mike Rhoades or Craig Smith.

I'd take a mute guy sitting on the bench and punching the balls off himself the entire game over handy manning.

Look, kids, just admit it. Wake basketball is over. It's better to just ignore that it even exists. We had a good thing for a while and now we don't. Not the end of the world, and those of us around for the good times regret it. At this point it is not going to change.

Utah State is historically a pretty good program no doubt. Murray State is too.

But, Utah State had never won more than 18 games since joining the Mountain West. In Smith's first year, they won 28. It took McMahon 4 years to get there, while coaching in an easier conference and taking over a program that had won 29 games the year before he was hired. At South Dakota, Smith took over a program that had been in D1 for 6 years, added 5 games to the win total in his first year, and took them to 22 and 26 his 3rd and 4th years.

Also, per your other post, McMahon's first conference regular season title came when the OVC was still split in divisions. 4 teams in the other division had more conference wins than Murray State.

Quick check-in here... Murray State is 5-4. Utah State is 9-1 (and ranked). Neither has exactly faced a murder's row, though.

Look.
We're beat down. Apathetic. Checked out.
All that is true...
BUT.
Comments like the above are the most pathetically LOWF Bullshit every damn time some idiot posts them on here or any other Wake forum.

All we need is a new coach and a new start. A coach who can and will win. That's all.
Jesus. Stop with all this defeatist horseshit all the damn time.

Rick Pitino...guy will behave and absolutely kill himself to get Wake competing for championships. We’ll national media and he’s not afraid of anyone. I think he would jump at the job...he wants to right the wrong and go out as a HOF coach.

I know this might not be popular with many of you but Wake needs a total rebuild...Pitino is the man

I believe Currie already knows he's gonna fire Manning. The question is....why wait one more fucking day? Doesn't make any sense.

Easy answer of course. The contract we voluntarily entered into.

A great Coach would be awesome. It also isn’t enough to consistently win at Wake. We need the complete package at Wake. Proper stadium, proper Coach, proper practice facilities. now have 1 of those.

This is a lost 2 decade stretch for Wake hoops. It isn’t coming back until 2025 at the earliest. That makes it all the more important to use this time to get the package correct.

We have not built a stadium for a century. One can debate what happened in 1989. Hard for many to accept the errors that were made. Time to put them aside and do what is the best thing to do in 2020 for the benefit of the next 4-5 decades.

I suspect it would be impossible to raise the necessary funds for a new arena while the team completely fucking blows and we have a lame duck head coach.

We're going to need to solve the coach part of your equation first.

Unless you plan on building an intimate 100 seat arena.

While I disagree that we could not do it now, your thought is an interesting one. The justification for the disaster of 1989 was "we were broke...we had no money." Ok, then why didn't we wait and get it right? Why sentence us to 30 years of disaster? And even worse, why are we using our financial disaster of 30 years ago, and subsequent bad decision, to justify what we are doing from 2020-2050?

If now isn't the time, let's admit it (and why) and announce tentative plans for 2025. Quit throwing good money after bad with the disaster LJVM and open it up for a discussion about what is best for 2025 and then try and get there.

Problems with LJVM?

What is wrong with the LJVM Coliseum? I have been going to various games and events there since it opened 30 years ago and it is still a great facility. It is well maintained with very good sight lines to the floor. The concourse is nice but gets clogged up with all of the vendors, information and promotion desks and other stuff, so getting around can be an issue. Those things are fixable. We don’t need a bunch of new luxury boxes. Having a very good basketball team would cure a lot of these ills people are complaining about.

On Packer and Durham this morning they did the ACC basketball power rankings. Wake Forest was #15 of 15. All the other teams were in blue centered on the screen, Wake Forest had its name in white, small, on the bottom left of the screen. The conference's own network does not even want to acknowledge Wake Forest basketball. The time to fire this guy is now, and set a clear message we are changing this last decade of complete irrelevance. The narrative would change if we keep losing but it's known we are looking for a new coach. Keeping Manning until the end of the season just continues to make Wake Forest something the media wants ignore, including our own ACC network. At least let them talk about the potential of a new star head coach as we get blown out playing the conference schedule.
