Sorry, but the defense was bad all year long. They had a good day against Duke.

A great day. And an excellent second half vs. Memphis as well -- arguably whole game since Memphis scored two non-offensive TDs. And at least a solid day against State too.

Season def hinges on how improved it is though, no question

Looked pretty decent against State. We will be much improved due to better LB play. Defensive backs will be better if we can replace Cam Glenn's production. Replacing Chuck Wade won't be a problem. DL, as mentioned, will be our achilles heel.

Interior DL will be the issue. I have faith in our DEs. But after Kamara, Bergan, and T. Williams, we have no over over 275 with experience to plug in there.

I'm kinda pessimistic

worse at every offensive position except QB
defensive depth is down from a bad D

5 wins

Yeah. Shitty Wake luck to lose Miles Fox. He would have been huge for us

The defense wasn't bad against Pitt either. They held up until they were on the field for too long.

to illustrate this point, in the first half of that game WF held Pitt to 156 yards while gaining 163

however, Pitt ran 39 plays and held the ball for 20:40 in that first half, while WF ran 24 plays and held it for the other 9:20

Some of that is on the Wake defense. The story has been that Wake defense plays well on downs 1 and 2, but can't seal the deal and get off the field on third down.

not in the first half of the Pitt game

Pitt had 6 first-half possessions:
two 3-and-outs
one 4-and-out that came on the heels of a WF possession that lasted 7 seconds (INT) (*insert Pitino joke here)
one 6-play drive yielding 0 yards
two drives that did anything (one long TD drive, one turnover on downs after 9 plays, 48 yards)

Pitt's first possession of the 2nd half was a 4-and-out for -1 yard (sandwiched by two 3-and-outs averaging 1:03 of possession for WF)

in 2018, that's acceptable defensive play

but then the floodgates broke open

Pitt's offense was en fuego at that point as well, they had just rushed for nearly 500 yards on Bud Foster and VT. Also rushed for 250 vs UVa and 480 vs Duke in the two weeks before that.

We held their rushing attack well below those numbers, but perhaps sold out too much against that which lead to their QB's one good day of the season

yep. Decent game plan but our execution didn't hold up across the board.

The flaw in the game plan was not seeking to control clock on offense. Pitt has two 1,000 yard rushers and our defense was short staffed. They were going to get theirs if we kept giving them opportunities.

Deacs go 9-3.
Highlights:
Start the season 6-0, or better.
Beat FSU
Win the state (NC championship)

We had 4 3rd quarter possessions. The first three were 3 and outs that took :40, 1:26, and 1:16 off the clock. Pitt scored a TD on their last four possessions starting after our 2nd possession. The offense had nothing and the damn broke.

Major factor indeed.

You could see the defense turn a corner vs Cuse last year. The 41 points given up were very misleading. Turnovers and some unfortunate calls (the cuse center flinching on 4th and goal from the 1 and that BS DPI on 3rd and long that kept the drive going) hurt, but the defense played the best they had all season in that game. We actually out gained them in total yards.
