Wake Football Week 10 Honors thread - Maggio ACC Specialist of the Week

This is what they said about the other LBs:

[h=3]Linebacker[/h] [h=5]David Curry, Georgia Tech[/h] The Yellow Jackets had to go up against the option offense, and despite losing to The Citadel, Curry had a dominant performance that saw him rack up 10 defensive stops on 14 total tackles without a single whiff. He was targeted once in coverage and had an interception to boot.
Second-Team LB: Dax Hollifield, Virginia Tech
[h=3]Linebacker[/h] [h=5]James Skalski, Clemson[/h] Clemson blew out Syracuse in the end and Skalski was a big reason why on defense, recording seven total defensive stops including two sacks and five more in run defense. He allowed all of 17 yards in coverage and had four total quarterback pressures on the afternoon.
Second-Team LB: Zane Zandier, Virginia

If you look at DL, they had a very good day too. The big difference between PFF and ACC weekly honors is don't think PFF takes into account the competition as much as the ACC. I think the ACC rightfully gives more preference for games against ACC or top tier P5 opponents.

By the way, Newman was 2nd team QB. He was 1st team the previous two weeks. Walker was 2nd team RB. Benzinger was 2nd team OT. Bothroyd was 2nd team DI (presumably DT or NG).

Small sample size, but through the first quarter of the season Surratt has to be a top 5-10 wideout in the country. He's been absolutely dominant. Another game or two where he crushes it and his name will pop up on mid-season All-American lists.

He started out strong last year before fading.

He started out strong last year before fading.

Last year:

@ Tulane: 11 catches, 150 yds
v. Towson: 4-63
v. BC: 3-50, 1 TD

This year:
v. Utah State: 7-158-1
@ Rice: 6-45-1
v. UNC: 9-169-1

I'd say there's enough difference to believe he'll have some more sustainability. Clawson also made mention last year, and it was in passing and paled in comparison to other injuries, that Sage was hindered in the middle of the season by a strained groin. He just never missed a game, so wasn't really reported that much.

For the first week this season, no Wake player was honored by the ACC.

Newman, Scotty, and Herron were named to the PFF ACC Team of Week 4.

[h=5]Jamie Newman, Wake Forest[/h] Another week, another dominant performance from Newman who is currently the highest-graded quarterback on passes targeted at least 10 yards downfield. The decision to start him over Sam Hartman is now turning past a wise decision and now speaking to more of a credit to Hartman for being able to push the conference’s highest-graded QB through four weeks.

Second-Team RB: Kenneth Walker III, Wake Forest

[h=3]Wide Receiver[/h] [h=5]Scotty Washington, Wake Forest[/h] Targeted more than any other receiver in the conference in Week 4, Washington has now finished the last two games without a drop after seeing four in his first two contests of the season. He turned nine receptions into 138 yards, two scores and three more first-down receptions.
Second-Team WR: Sage Surratt, Wake Forest

Second-Team C: Zach Tom, Wake Forest

[h=3]Offensive Tackle[/h] [h=5]Justin Herron, Wake Forest[/h] Herron didn’t allow a single QB pressure on his 46 pass-blocking snaps this past week, finishing with a commanding lead over the rest of the ACC tackles in pass-blocking grade while also grading positively in the run game.

[h=1]Carney a Semifinalist for William V. Campbell Trophy[/h]
https://godeacs.com/news/2019/9/25/football-carney-a-semifinalist-for-william-v-campbell-trophy.aspx

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest senior running back Cade Carney on Wednesday was named as a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation. Celebrating its 30[SUP]th[/SUP] year in 2019, the award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

[h=3]9. Jamie Newman, QB, Wake Forest[/h] The nation’s highest-graded passer on throws targeted at least 10 yards downfield, Newman has as legitimate of a chance to win the Heisman if his team can finish the year undefeated as anyone. Unfortunately for Newman, they have games against Virginia Tech, Florida State and a mid-November trip to Clemson that will ultimately test them. However, if he continues to rely on this quick offense with delayed reads that pit to his strengths of dissecting defenses, we could very well be staring at two undefeated teams squaring off when the Demon Deacons and Clemson Tigers do battle on November 16. The winner of that game not only has the best chance of winning the ACC but the signal-caller should likely see himself to New York if Newman’s current trajectory continues.

------

People laughed when I said Newman was going to start getting mentioned with Trevor Lawrence. Now Newman is getting mentioned ahead of Trevor Lawrence with PFF saying Newman has a chance at a trip to New York if Wake can upset Clemson.

Not I. I wanted him on field in 2018 as soon as he was ready to go which was long before the State game.

Tyler Williams was the only player who made the PFF Week 5 ACC First or Second Team

https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-week-5-eckrich-acc-team-of-the-week[h=3]Defensive Interior[/h] [h=5]Tyler Williams, Wake Forest[/h] Williams recorded just a lone pressure on the quarterback on his 15 pass-rushing snaps but his 27 snaps against the run were phenomenal. He finished with four solo tackles, all of which went down as a defensive stop and he did so without missing a single tackle attempt.

Welcome back Tyler!
Way to make your presence known.
We want more, please.

Exactly. With teams double teaming Boogie, somebody needs to step up and make them pay for doing so. Tyler sounds like he made most of his opportunities.

Guys on the other side from Boogie really have the advantages right now and can capitalize big time.

It seems from my eye that Shamar McCollum has mostly been quiet (and when I do notice him it’s often because he has dropped into coverage). For those who have been paying more attention, how is the McCollum / Johns / Walker rotation looking? Anyone we should expect to step up?

Dom Maggio named ACC Specialist of the Week

Henderson got beat out for DB of the Week by Deablo from VT who had a fumble return TD, INT, and 5 tackles vs. ND. I think Henderson's 2 INTs, 4 pass breakups, and 6 tackles is better.

QB Newman, C Tom, LB Monroe, CB Henderson, and CB Taylor named to the PFF ACC Team of the Week.

CB Henderson was named to the PFF National Team of the Week.
https://www.pff.com/news/college-football-week-10-eckrich-team-of-the-week[h=3]Cornerback[/h] [h=5]Amari Henderson, Wake Forest[/h] The entire Wake Forest team fired on all cylinders and Henderson was no exception to that as he was triumphant in coverage. He was targeted a whopping 12 times, allowed five receptions for 32 yards and came away with two interceptions, four pass breakups and a passer rating of just 9.7 when targeted.

Not sure anything is more Wake Forest than the one player recognized in a 44-10 win being the punter.

Nah, Amari getting screwed. Too bad he did not hang on to that Pic 6

Yeah, along with the other pick he had in his hands. 4 picks, including a pick 6 would be a spectacular day for any DB.
