Friday afternoon's ribbon cutting at the Sutton Performance Center and the Shah Basketball Complex were very impressive. Both Ben & Mit shared a few words, essentially saying there is no reason WF cannot compete at the highest levels in every sport. They gave credit to Bob McCreary for inspiring both of them. Both gave credit to Dr. Hatch, Ron Wellman and the BOT for the commitment to improve facilities.

Then they cut the ribbon and people streamed in to tour the new buildings. That is when jaws dropped. It is such an incredible facility! My sense was that people were simply awed, proud, surprised, and excited at every turn. People like Carl Tucker, Alan Fox, Prentiss Baker and others also made major contributions to the new buildings deserve our thanks also.

Ben Sutton, who has probably been on more college campuses than anyone we know, says our facilities take a back seat to no one. I hope every WF fan has the chance to see these new digs. And if you know any of these men (and/or their families), please express your gratitude for their generosity. They have all made generational gifts that have and will change the trajectory of the future of athletics at Wake Forest.

Did Sutton apologize for propping up Wellman while he burned our hoops program to the ground?

Pretty sure that was Sutton high-fiving our players in the end zone coming off the field at the end of the game last night. If so, kudos to him for being near the field with the coaches/players not being up in the Tower with the $$ folks.

Kudos? That’s a cushier, more prominent spot than the tower.

New basketball coach would be much better ROI. They are just flushing money down the drain until that happens. Just think of all the lost revenue over the past 10 years.

Those three need to decide it is time for a change in basketball leadership and whisper that thought in Currie's ear.

They believe this and still prop up Manning? What the actual fuck?

Agree. Would rather see a competent coach.

Buildings and all the extras are probably necessary to get from good to great but it will do nothing to jump start this embarrassment of a basketball program.

Those 3 would have done more for Wake by putting their money in a bank until Wake hires a competent coach. Just like every other year of the past 10, we watched promising coaches get hired by programs with less history in worse conferences.

We already wasted CP3’s donation.

Think about our facilities compared to all of the teams that have been better than us over the last 10 seasons. Hell, we are behind teams that share their varsity gyms with intramurals. Facilities don't mean shit until we bother to make a decent hire. All the awesome facilities in the world are worthless is this craptastic group of players is all we can use them to recruit.

When will we start to worry about another program looking to hire a 4 time Bowl Champion coach from us. We'll need these guys again, and sooner than we want.

Because of our size of enrollment...which in many ways makes us so special, Wake Forest has the smallest athletics budget of any school in any Power 5 conference. Our physical resources and facilities were terrible...among the worst...and now they are among the very best of any Power 5 school in America. The future possibilities for Football and our Olympic sports are staggering. While basketball must first become relevant...these world-class facilities and resources provide our program (for the first time ever) all the physical tools and resources to compete for championships. We now need leadership to execute. The time is most certainly now.

Ehh. Seems a bit hyperbolic.

Facilities are a cherry on top of a good program. They won't do shit for a program without leadership, players and coaching. By the time we dig ourselves out of the hole Wellman put us in, the facilities won't be shiny and new anymore anyway. We have already lost the chance to take advantage of our great new facilities by allowing Manning to remain. Our priorities are out of order. We had an AD and donors who are more concerned with real estate development and seeing their name on buildings than the actual coaches and teams that work inside of them. That's fine, their money...but let's not pretend that this building is going to contribute much, if anything, to future Wake success (or lack thereof) relative to the other improvements Wake has refused to make the last 10 years.

This is exactly right. By the time the basketball ship is righted (if it ever is again), these buildings will be dated.

Should have hired a coach that showed some promise and these facilities could have meant something.

Feels like some of y'all should learn to compartmentalize your feelings. Like, I can hope Manning never coaches another basketball game for Wake Forest again in his life and still be proud of the new facilities. I recognize there's an element of zero sum about this, but not everything has to be so damn miserable all the time.

Surprised at the negativity here.
Are we upset with the status of our basketball program? Absolutely.
At the same time, how can you not be grateful for these new facilities. They will definitely help raise the level of our programs for years to come. Would you rather not have them?
I thank these 3 gentlemen for their contributions.

Yes I would rather not have them. Contributing millions of dollars to Wellman, and in particular the basketball program, while the basketball program has been in the shitter for 10 years reinforces the negative behavior. It is like giving your kid candy while he is being punished. These 3 gentlemen can take their facilities and shove them up their ass. They are a primary cause of the current problem. Spend the money on getting an actual coach, not a building.
