2019-20 College Basketball Thread

I miss how it feels to blowout a ranked team at home.

Reigning national champs score 40 points in 40 minutes at Purdue.

No matter what happens with Wake tonight, the UVA loss is the story.

I know they have injuries, but yikes.

GT not terrible this year. Some nice pieces.

Mack would never have taken the Wake job. He was only going to leave Xavier for a blue blood type school.

When GT fired Gregory Mack was the first coach they contacted (the GT AD at the time was the one that hired him to be X's HC after Miller left for AZ).

GT has the potential to be a solid team, especially once they get all their pieces. Right now Jose Alvarado is out until the end of December with an ankle injury (he only played the 1st game and some ineffective min against UGA) and Jordan Usher becomes eligible after the KY game. That's 2 of probably their 4 best players not playing yet.

Bacot suffers what looks to be a bad ankle injury against Ohio State, and is out for the rest of the game, and maybe a good deal longer. If he's out for a good chunk of the season, then UNC is probably screwed. Anthony and Bacot have been the only consistently good players for them thus far this year, imo.

ETA: Watching more of the game in the second half, without Bacot UNC is basically Cole Anthony and nothing else. They have no reliable scorers other than Anthony and Bacot, and their much-praised grad transfers (Keeling and Pierce) suck. They're both poor defenders and Keeling, who was supposed to be a good shooter, can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Virginia looks terrible.

I've been saying UVA will struggle against better competition. They lack scorers, and they lost 1 of their top 3 scorers in Key for another several weeks. And they lack some athleticism, which will hurt their team defensive #s. Morsell is starting to look better offensively. But if they're going to have Stattman in there 20+ minutes per game to add to Clark's lack of scoring, they'll continue to struggle against high major opponents. With no one else hitting shots, Purdue was also able to double Diakite some, and UVA had no answers. I'm also waiting to see if more teams zone them.

Bad night overall for the ACC too. And now that I've seen teams like Duke, Michigan, Mich St, UNC and Maryland a couple of times, there is a complete lack of elite teams in the NCAAs this season. A lot of nice teams, but no teams that were playing at the level that teams like UVA, Duke and Texas Tech were playing at last year.

Yeah, this Sunday's match-up between UNC and UVA is going to be even less stellar without Bacot and Key. I anticipate a lot of masonry.

UVA is depleted.

Last night at Purdue, UVA was playing freshman walk-on Chase Coleman (he is 5-9 as is Kihei Clark; HS teams have bigger backcourts) and other freshman (Caffero and McKoy) that aren't ready to play a high level D-1 basketball. Also, it's killing UVA that Morsell (11% from 3) and Woldetensae (14% from 3) have played way-under expectation so far. Their offense is pathetic right now. If Key comes back, UVA could still be a factor, if light ever comes on for Morsell and Woldetensae , but right now, UVA literally can not score. Since Key has been out, UVA has scored: 46 against Maine and was fortunate to score 40 last night.

UNC scored 49 against Ohio State. First team to 40 may win the UNC/UVA game. Also, love that William and Mary transfer Justin Pierce sucks. William and Mary is actually off to a good start would love to see them make the NCAAs (for the first time in school history) this year, while UNC struggles.

In the Wake Coaching Candidate Casino, I'd have to put some chips on McKay. I'm not saying he's among my top 5 choices, just that I can see him getting a call from Currie after others turn him down.

Agree. There are some concerns. He is 64. He had up and down record at New Mexico and ended up getting fired from there. Spent 6 seasons under Tony Bennett, and now has it going at Liberty (40-7 over the last two years, including an NCAA tourney win over Miss. State). McKay is experienced and is really familiar with the Middle Atlantic recruiting scene, but at his age, seems unlikely to be a long term solution, but McKay would make WF far more competitive than it is now.

Again disagree that McKay should get consideration for the Wake job. (This is assuming Manning is fired, which I don't think is anything close to a given after last offseason.) Going from Liberty to an ACC program is a big leap, he doesn't have a high profile, and he's too old. Not saying he isn't a good coach, just that I'd be aiming higher and younger. If you want to go for a lower major coach, I'd way rather grab Wes Miller.

Yesterday's UNC/UVA game was a masonry festival for much of the game - all game for UNC. The relative level of play and talent was more reminiscent of a Gillen v. Doherty match-up than a Williams/Bennett tilt. UVA pulled away because they shot FTs better, hustled a lot more, and, as has frequently been the case under Roy, UNC just doesn't play great D. They let Caffaro get into double digits and were fouling jump shooters a ton, and especially late in the shot clock. This really is Bennett's least talented team since his 1st 2 editions, but at least they play D.
