Predict the final 8 games

It's weird to be in a place where we're talking about our HC getting poached. I don't think any Wake HC has ever been hired away by a program that would be consodered a step up. Yeah, Grobe was close, but it didn't happen.

Mackovic went to Texas.

Mackovic went to Texas.

Eventually, after stops with the Cowboys, the Chiefs, and Illinois. I would consider getting a gig on Landry's staff as an assistant head coach a step up from Wake at the time.

Yeah, I forgot about all of that other stuff. That's like saying Caldwell went straight to Colts head coach.

It’s not really a rational fear yet something that our fanbase obsesses over. People were worried that Kansas would poach Manning minutes after Manning was hired.

Mackovic left WF to be the QB coach for the Cowboys. Words was that Mackovic didn't feel like WF had made a sufficient commitment to facilities and to the recruiting budget to allow him to compete. Mackovic then got the Chiefs head job, then Illinois, Texas and Arizona.

Similarly, Al Groh left WF after a dispute with the AD (Gene Hooks) about the terms of an extension and WF's commitment to football. Groh initially went to the Falcons, then was the DC at S. Carolina, and then followed his buddy Parcels to the Giants, Browns (under Belichick) and Pats. Ultimately to get HC gig with the Jets.

Kind of the same path for Caldwell after he was canned. Based upon his relationship with Dungy, Caldwell worked under him in TB and Indy, and ultimately got two head jobs.

Pretty good record for coaches after they leave WF. 3 future NFL HCs.

Clawson and his family are very happy in Winston-Salem. He has said so on many occasions.

He's a great fit at Wake and we've upgraded the facilites to keep him here.

Wellman actually got this hire right.

Not that I think he'll leave anytime soon, but what's he supposed to say in public? "Fuck this place, I'm leaving as soon as I get the chance." Coaches are publicly happy until the press conference is scheduled when they resign to go elsewhere.

WF (or any school, fill in the blank) pays the existing coach who is successful what the market bears for that level of success. If the school doesn't then that coach most likely will look for financial and professional recognition of his talents elsewhere. If WF fails to understand the value of a successful coach which they did with John Mackovic, Peahead Walker and arguably others, then its Deacon Blues again.
Given the state of affairs with basketball the best option for WF, and any coach including DC knows this, is to HEAVILY support football.
Football is where the college comes together with the community best. Look no further than the SEC and the historic Big 10 with huge stadiums. WF has an opportunity to get ahead of all the others in North Carolina IF there is the recognition of the value of doing so for the benefit of the Wake Forest brand for academics and for athletics. There is money here for all of those at the top of this food chain if they simply recognize it. A successful WF football program can put many more spectators in the seats than are currently attending. An unsuccessful WF football program will bleed the treasury. As an example, basketball must be limping and operating on life support as a stand alone.

True, but Clawson has come out several times unprovoked and said that he loves Wake and considers it his final job.

Of course he has. He's healthy, in the prime of his career and successful, and making more money than god. Wake and W-S have been good to him and his family.

He's also driven and highly competitive. It's unlikely he finishes his career at Wake. When he moves on we should all wish him well.

Could Clawson be the extraordinarily rare coach who decides he likes WF enough to stay despite offers to go elsewhere? Sure, it's possible, but this idea that Wake is a place that no coach in their right mind would ever want to leave is kind of funny.

Hadn’t thought of that.
Doubt there’s very many colleges that can say that.
It could actually be an asset in recruiting future coaches. Like maybe in 15 years when Clawson decides to retire as the all time winningest coach in WF history.

Has anybody indicated such?

They are just saying that Dave Clawson has said several times without really being pushed that he considers wake his destination job. That is not something a coach usually says.

Whether a job is a coach's dream job depends on the coach and what they want out of coaching. Maybe the way that Wake does things is more in line with the way he wants to be a major college coach.

Mike Reilly went to Corvallis HS, where his father was an assistant at Oregon St. Years later he would return as OSU headcoach. He developed a winner out of the doormat program. The Chargers came to him with a boat load of money. He left the program to Dennis Erikson who thumped ND in the Fiesta Bowl with Reilly's players. Erikson went on to the 49ers. Reilly came back to Corvallis. When asked by a reporter, what did he learn in the NFL he said "If you're happy, then stay happy". 'Nuff said.

And then he left again and got fired at Nebraska.

He was an AAF head coach and is an XFL OC and QB coach. Geez.

Going back a ways, Cal Stoll left Wake to be HC at Minnesota. Three years, two winning seasons, an ACC title and gone.

It's fun for everybody to enjoy the very positive start to the season. But for chrissakes get a grip. We're not the NE Patriots. We're not even the best Wake Forest team of the past 15 years. The most favorable aspect of the rest of the season is that our conference opponents except for Clemson all have big warts. The difference between us on them is our warts haven't been exposed yet. We're gonna lose at Clemson, badly. The rest of the games are winnable for sure, and if we don't play well we could lose ALL of them. If we end up with 8 regular season wins that will be a very successful season imo. Let's get the next one at BC. Fingers crossed for a great performance and a positive result.

This Wake team has some guys with NFL measurables who are playing at very high levels. Unlike some other years when it felt more like out scheming teams, this Wake team feels like it has a talent and size advantage, especially in key positions. (QB, WR, RB, LT, DE, cornerback, linebacker)
Yes, Wake had some weak spots, but the strengths can cover those weak spots most games.

If you offered the other P5 coaches a swap of their best receiver for Sage, how many turn you down?

Fusiondad dabbles in hot takes like Monet dabbles in watercolors

Duke smoked Virginia Tech 45-10 in Blacksburg? Not many of you guys predicted a Wake loss to Duke but they looked very good tonight. Virginia Tech has officially fallen on hard hard times. Loss to ODU last season. Blowout loss to Duke this season. Hopefully their nothing to even brag about anymore bowl streak will end soon.
