2019-20 MLB Hot Stove Thread...

The value of a minor league team is at least partly based on the existence of an affiliation with a major league team and participation on a league organized by MLB. If major league baseball is terminating those franchise agreements, an arguement could be made that MLB owes the franchise holders some compensation.

In one view, this could be seen as "big corporation" pushing costs onto little guys. The proposed Dreamers League, playing without support from MLB would develop players who would then go into the official farm system teams.

They are not really franchise agreements. They are two to four year affiliation agreements called Player Development Contracts. Every four years or so there is a scramble as some minor league teams change affiliations when the PDC with their current major league team expires. All a big league club would have to do is wait until a PDC expires and not renew it.

Owners of minor league teams who are cut from the system could form independent leagues and still develop players and sell their contracts to big league teams.

If the PDCs are that changeable, what reason would MLB teams have for buying contracts of players from the independents? Just wait until the contract is up and sign the player to a free agent contract.

That would push the independent teams to go to the NFL contract model. A three year contract meant the player was bound to the team for that length of time, but the team could cut the player at any time and owe him nothing more beyond what he had been paid.

Uhhhh - nothing on the Astros/Yanks ending? In retrospect, I'm glad the Yankees tied it up in the top of the 9th, so the Astros/Altuve could rip their hearts out in the bottom of the 9th. What an ending!

Yeah, with the benefit of hindsight, the tie was cool. In the moment, not so cool. Winning the bullpen game gives the Astros two Cole starts, which is huge against that Nats rotation.

Half way through game 1 of the World Series, Nationals leading Astros, with Cole pitching for Astros, by a score of 5 - 2.

Nationals win game 1 of the World Series, 5 - 4. Scherzer gets the win; Cole loses first game since 22 May.

Nats used Corbin as a reliever again. Scherzer threw a lot of pitches for his five innings of work.

Does Corbin still start game 4?

Sanchez will start game 3 and Corbin will start game 4. Yesterday was Corbin's side session day. They did the same against the Cardinals.

Also, Juan Soto is 20.

This was an important topic of conversation among the 40-something year old lady Nats fans I watched with yesterday.

Soto’s movement in the batter’s box when taking a pitch reminds of the Future Islands lead singer dancing.

Jealous of the last 18 months for any Caps/Nats/UVa fans

Don't forget the Mystics. It's weird to live in a world where DC teams are winning championships.

Also, Kris Bryant might blow up MLB's jacked-up service time process: https://sports.yahoo.com/kris-bryants-grievance-could-change-193216148.html

I don't think he will get far with his grievance. Collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the Players Association clearly states the date after which major league service does not accrue for the year. Because that date was agreed to in labor-management bargaining, it is hard to see what his case is.

Perhaps some board labor relations attorney would have a different opinion.
