Wake will never compete for anything meaningful without a defense

The offensive fireworks against mid-tier teams are a lot of fun, but until we figure out our horrific defensive shortfalls we will never get above mid-tier bowl status.

Thanks for this thread. It’s very helpful.

It's fucking gospel. Wake has BS'd it's way to 5 wins in the easy part of its schedule, now it has to actually stop teams from scoring.

It’s almost Sunday, man. Just hold Strong.

Dumbest thread.

D played okay. You have won with this D, special teams were bad.

How many points did our D give up when the opposing team actually started on their side of the field, legitimately curious..

Louisville had 5 drives that started in Wake territory (counting the KR TD). They had 4 TDs and 1 FG (31 points)

Four of those drives were in the 1st half. The other five drives of the 1st half started inside the Louisville 24. Those yield one TD the 2nd TD.

Starting with their 2nd drive of the 2nd half, every Louisville drive started in Louisville territory. They scored on drives that started on their own 30 (TD), 44 (TD), 49 (FG), 50 (TD). They didn’t score on the drives that started on the 24 (INT), 32 (punt), 34 (punt), and the end of the game.

When you look at Clawson's tenure, D has not been a strength. Seems D did better his first 2-3 years with Grobe recruits. D numbers aren't good. Points allowed generally ok except we've had multiple games in past 3 years where opponents scored over 40. Yardage totals is what sticks out. Giving up 60 points to Louisville is the embarrassment of his tenure, and a super indictment to overall D's lack of talent, size, coaching, and scheme, compared to mid to upper ACC teams for some time now.

Fair but how many 3rd and +10 did our D give up? D didn’t lose it. Mistakes did. But damn D looked like shit a whole lot of the game. Bend don’t break doesn’t work when we spot them 21 on special team fuck ups and turnovers. But no the D didn’t look so hot either.

Their offense was better than our defense. Their special teams were better than ours. Our offense was good enough to win with mediocre special teams and defensive play. And that even with our offense fucking up their fair share too. Hell without starting game with a god damn false start. And Carney’s fumble who the hell knows how the game goes. Jamie cost us 7 at the half. Total team effort. Every part of our team contributed to this loss. Any part of the team stepping up and we have a win. Can’t fuck up at all three facets of the game and beat descent teams though.

Even with our fuckups, our offense was better than their D more than their offense was better than our D IMO.. in a replay of that game without the absolute fuckups on special teams and the even worse officiating, we win that game 9/10 times. I don't blame that game on our D at all. It's hard to expect a D to perform that well considering our pace on offense + the messups that left them with awful field position IMO.

D played ok but not great. Pick one of three. Defense doesn’t give up multiple third and +10 and get off field (happened over and over again), OR special teams doesn’t spot them 21, OR offense doesn’t turnover multiple times and leave 3 if not 7 off the board at half or fumble on a drive we are moving ball and give short field first fucking thing and we win. It’s ridiculous that no part of our team stepped up but more ridiculous it was as close as it was. They whipped out ass at almost every facet of game and still stole a win with some terrible officiating to boot.

Game six of Scott Satterfield's tenure at Louisville(considered by most to be a complete rebuild year) versus year 6 of Clawson's tenure at Wake.

Agreed. See my other post. But if our D gets off the field 50% of the third and forevers we win. Our offense is a top twenty team offense. Our defense is not. Special teams look D2 but that’s probably offensive to Lenoir-Rhyne.

Ok UNC fanboi (going to assume since you obviously have some affinity for chapel hill based on your chosen boards name here).. lets compare WFU AD budget vs Lousiville AD budget.. and while you're at can you tell me where they both rank academically?

Clawson took over WFU in a much much worse situation than fucking Satterfield got at Lousivlle, it's not even really close.

Satterfield got lucky as fuck his defense got away with a bunch of shit tonight because chickenshit refs were largely too afraid to call PI when it mattered.

Lot more fun to watch than the 6-3 overtime games.

Maybe the D will get better, but this team is fun to watch when they have the ball.
