Uber/Lyft

Consumers love vape products. So, we shouldn't worry about the health risks
.

no one argued against all regulation

Bikers don't want to wear helmets. Consumers have spoken. Why should non-riders demand they wear helmets?

bike helmets aren't required for adults in any state

I haven't had a ticket in over 30 years nor an accident in longer. Why should I have to carry car insurance?

you don't have to, most states allow you to appeal to be self-insured.

Bikers obviously means motorcycle riders.

Self-insurance means you have to have a bond or savings to cover X amount of costs. It's still a cost and following a law. You are de facto insured.

RJ is just too fucking dumb to realize that the only real requirements for driving a taxi or an Uber are a driver's license and a car. If you're not quaified to have those things, you won't.

BUT MUH UNIFORM REGULASHONS

Using the inane logic that all you should need to be a driver of the public is a driver's license, then all a home builder should need is some wood, wire, plaster and tools. They shouldn't have to follow any damn rules.

If you buy a scalpel and have taken biology, you should be able to be a surgeon.

If you have a fridge and some food, fuck health codes, you have a restaurant.

You're like a walking billboard for why being Libertarian is fucking awesome. You should charge. Hook up with the CATO institute and just pitch slippery-slope softballs one after another.

you can call yourself whatever as long as you're not misrepresenting your [lack of] credentials

the only actual insane logic on display

So in RJ's analogy, the taxi driver is the expert ex-military pilot and the Uber/Lyft driver is the unlicensed, drunken Farmer Fred crop-duster who's going to fly your PJ into a mountain. Did I get that right?

That crop-duster saved the goddamn world in Independence Day. Have some respect for Randy Quaid.

If you think the Cato Institute is anything other than a extreme RW excuse machine, you are deluding yourself. It exists to excuse any abuse including health, pollution or even employee safety or pay.

rj do you even know what is on the test(s) for taxi drivers?

here's an example of the rigorous standards:

A referral form (form approved by the Taxicab Authority) from a taxicab company in Clark County prior to applying for a permit, Driver must also provide proof that the Driver's Awareness Program (DAP) training has been completed. (a 4 hour 'course' on defensive driving).

Applicant will be scheduled for an electronic test, upon passing, the applicant must pay $91.25 ($91.25 = $40.00 application fee + $51.25 fingerprint fee) to complete permit process.

A completed "AUTHORIZATION FOR RELEASE OF INFORMATION" form, which will be supplied to the applicant by the taxicab company. Applicant must submit full physician’s certificate, from a medical examiner who is listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners and licensed to practice medicine in the State of Nevada (M.D., D.O., D.C., P.A., or A.P.N.). The physician shall issue the certificate if they find that a prospective driver meets health requirements established by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 49 C.F.R. §391.41-391.49. NRS 706.8842, NAC 706.519 .

Applicant must have a valid Nevada Drivers License issued under NRS 483.325 which authorizes him to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Nevada.

Must be a resident of Nevada or a state (Arizona or California) that adjoins Clark County before applying for a permit.
List history of ALL convictions and pending court cases.

The Nevada Taxicab Authority requires proof the applicant can read and orally communicate in the English language by way of passing an electronic test. (NRS 706.8841 1(b)(2))

Permit applications must be completed by the applicant.
Applicant will be fingerprinted by Nevada Taxicab Authority staff and will be required to sign a fingerprint authorization form, authorizing the Administrator to forward the fingerprints to the State of Nevada Criminal History Repository for submission to the Federal Bureau if Investigation to ascertain whether the applicant has a criminal record, and the nature of any such record.
Applicant must complete and sign a form regarding child support status. NRS425.520.

The test consists of twenty (20) multiple choice questions. To pass the test, the applicant may have no more than five (5) incorrect answers. The applicants will take the test on a Taxicab Authority computer. Applicants will be given only thirty (30) minutes in which to complete the test, at which time the computer will stop the test and notify the applicant that the time limit has been reached. Once the test has been started, it will not be stopped or restarted. If the applicant demands that the test be stopped before all questions are answered, or before the time limit expires, the applicant will FAIL that particular test.

NYC's requirements are equally "strenuous" - except their course is 6 hours long instead of 4

I'm all for regulations that benefit the public, but I'm having a hard time believe you've ever been in a taxi if you think those drivers are better because of class they took

Then why should you oppose them?

If Uber and Lyft can out compete on even playing field, GREAT!

what, driving around all day with a flip phone open on speakerphone in one hand isn't an identifier of a Top Gun Driving Academy graduate?

cabs refuse to use GPS and don't always get you where you want to go quickly

exactly - if anything, cabs are the ones that should be forced to compete on an even playing field of rate/route transparency

Had a great Lyft ride today with a guy who is an indy wrestler who has worked for some of the second tier promotions. Had a great conversation about old school wrestling.

Going back to yesterday’s conversation, whoever figures out self-driving vehicles could be the Amazon of transportation. They’ll be able to disrupt industries from auto sales, rental cars, public transportation, trucking, education, manufacturing, retail, it’s almost limitless. Today’s children could be the last generation in which a majority learn how to drive.
