Taggart just got canned and starts the Coaching Carousel early

Willie was going to be fired after the Wake loss which is when all the commitment money came in.This was a total Booster club takeover. They fired Taggart by threatening to pull funds to other sports (ie. female sports) Bob Stoops will be named HC very soon. Kendall Briles will be staying as OC and Jim Leavitt the DC. You don't fire a coach with games left without a plan. Crazy how we came up with the money this fast with our reported financial issues. A great week for the ACC!

Well that's pretty disgusting all around

Yeah. Glad Wake gets credit for it though. Two Bowdens and another FSU coach. Never thought I’d see FSU hire an XFL coach.

Nothing like coming on another team's site and bragging about your own school pulling a classless internal political move.

LOL. He’s a long time poster from Stoneville, NC a little way north of campus. Good dude. Wake is his #2 team. Kind of like an FSU version of Biff.

Fair enough. Still doesn't really change the look of the comment though, does it?

Stoneville is in the boonies but has a nice country club IIRC. Deep River? Bob Stoops will require another 40 million over 6 years.

The cruelty is the point

Are people criticizing FSU for what we wanted our boosters to do for our basketball program?

There is a difference between looking to get rid of a guy who had six years and produced 3 of the worst seasons in history and firing a guy after a season and a half.

I don’t think anybody wanted boosters to threaten to defund women’s sports. Also there’s a big difference between spending $18M to buy out a coach during his second year and buying out an extension of arguably the worst coach in league history.

There is a difference. One allows a program to become completely irrelevant and the other rectifies a mistake as quickly as possible.

FSU has handled this in a very classy way unlike the classless and embarrassing way that Wake has handled the basketball program and dismissive attitude towards fans.

FSU proves that there is no reason to hold onto hot garbage. Instead Wake gives undeserved extensions despite the fact that it is clear the program is struggling and floundering.

Uhh, the anti-Wellman crowd that wouldn't give a penny to the Deacon Club was doing exactly that, just indirectly. And if everybody hates the coach's guts after 21 games, it's time to go. Taggart was driving that whole athletic department off a cliff.

Deep Springs CC. Used to be fully private but is now partially open to public. Great course; spent a few years running carts there in high school.

Shows exactly why Clawson wouldn’t be a good fit there. He’s taken three to four years to establish a good program everywhere he’s gone and FSU fans would’ve just booed him off campus before he was even halfway there. There are other schools like that as well but this is an obvious recent example.

I think Kendall Briles is terrible. His playcalling was awful. Keep him on board, I say.

I'm not sure how bringing in a retired coach making a comeback in the XFL and keeping the same OC is going to rejuvenate the program. This is similar to UNC.

Don't see any parallel between Taggart and Manning.

Prior to FSU, Taggart had been a head coach for 8 seasons at 3 different programs, with a winning record in his final season at each stop. Also, it takes longer to build a football program back than a basketball program given the amount of players on a football roster. The only players on the FSU roster that Taggart had a full recruiting cycle with are the true freshman, and even the best true freshman in football aren't difference makers right away. By way of example, Dave Clawson was 5-16 21 games into his football coaching career at WF. Maybe Taggart would've been a massive failure at FSU, but he was never given a chance to coach his players at all. Among the reasons Jimbo Fisher got out was that FSU's talent had slipped. FSU had 2 players drafted last year. That tied for the fewest in a decade for FSU. From 2013 to 2015, FSU had 12, 7, 11 players drafted; the Noles had backups that were drafted. Taggart would've won 10+ games with that talent too. The uniforms were the same, but Jimbo had checked out as a recruiter a few years before he left.

Essentially, for the last 4 seasons (including the current one), Manning has coached players that he recruited and developed (or failed to develop). Manning has been given a full opportunity to demonstrate his coaching chops. If there had been an inkling of progress over the past two seasons or even evidence of a gritty team that fought for 40 minutes, there at least would be an arguable defense that the program had hope. Right now, there is no hope.

FSU never gave Taggart a chance and fired him. WF gave Manning every chance in the world, and he is still here.
