Will Boogie and/or Newman return next year

Feel like anybody who's a borderline case will go. I expect we will take a step back next year in terms of W-L (and will not be ranked at any point) so this is the year to make the jump.

Walter Football has Jamie as the 6th ranked QB in the 2020 draft.

11/21/19: Newman has created a buzz in the scouting community this fall as a legit pro prospect for the NFL. He is a dual-threat quarterback with running and passing talent to challenge defenses. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder has quality size with a live arm and athleticism. He is very improved as a passer and is showing a lot of upside to develop for the pro ranks. Some team sources think Newman would be a second-day pick if he enters the 2020 NFL Draft, but he should go back for his senior year rather than turning pro.

They don't have Boogie in their top 23 DEs or Sage in their top 52 WRs though, which I assume means they just haven't scouted them.

CBS has Jamie at 74 overall, #7 QB. Boogie 63 overall, #7 EDGE. Sage 90 overall, #17 WR.

FWIW, WF signed 21 players in the 2016 HS class. According to 247, all were either three stars or two stars.

The top rated recruit in the class was Sulaiman Kamara #407 nationally, #41 DT, 9th in VA.

Jamie Newman was our #3 rated recruit in the class. #649 nationally (that translates to a 30th round pick), #17 Dual threat QB, and #30 in NC (laughable that 29 players in NC were rated higher). Newman's offer list was WF, Air Force, App, BC and Duke.

Essang Bassey was our #15 rated recruit in the class. Outside the top 1000 nationally, #156 CB, #150 from GA. Bassey's offer list was WF, Air Force, Charleston Southern, Furman and GA State.

Boogie Basham was our #16 rated recruit in the class. Outside the top 1000 nationally, #97 DE, #49 from VA (crazy that there 38 players from Virginia rated higher). Basham's offer list was Cincy, ODU and Pitt.

From the HS class of 2017, WF signed 21 players. Surratt was WF's #9 recruit (behind Waydale Jones among others). Surratt was ranked outside the top 1000 HS football players in the class of 2017 (wow), he was rated the #164 WR in the 2017 class and #37 in NC (what a joke). Surratt was offered by WF, Harvard, App, ECU and NC (NC recruited both Surratt brothers).

All will draw NFL paychecks.

We mock the Appies, but to be honest, they've historically been able to find and land their share of "Newman/Surratt" players. That really is how they've built that program up there. It's just harder for them now since they've come up a level to FBS and have to directly compete for underrated/overlooked talent in state.

Incredible #scoop here. Elite sauces.

Sage and Jamie are tight, so at the end of the day 1 guy leaving or staying may affect the other. Sage is still focused on healing and Jamie on finishing the season. I haven't heard anywhere that either has talked about NFL decisions yet. Their decisions will likely come after the bowl game. Boogie knows he's a high draft pick at this point, and I'm sure agents are chomping at the bit to talk to his family.

Jamie didn't take part in Senior Day so take that FWIW.

I'd guess Boogie is 90% gone.

Jamie and Sage would improve their draft stock with another season. Collected some awards and being in the Heisman talk next year would help both.

Sage isn't going to get any taller. He should leave.

I would say next year could be one of the most hyped Deacon FB seasons ever in preseason if Jamie and Sage were to return outside possibly our season after OB? Honestly if Jamie has confidence in the back-ups to our graduating OL then he may think long and hard about it as he could be up some more gaudy stats while making more noise in ACC.

Jamie would have a superstar RB behind him with KWalker who hopefully has a Cam Akers type of season with 20+ carries/game to go along with Sage @ WR along with Donovan, Groulx and our other WR depth could be super potent again. That to go along with a D that would only lose 4 starters (one which we have played without for the last few games fairly successfully) would be very intriguing for potential team success. Yes the 4 D players are playmakers with Boogie, Strnad, Amari, and Bassey, but you have all your 2 deep coming back elsewhere and some possible studs to fill in for each of those positions (Shamar, jacory, Chases @ Lb, etc.) although not as certain on CB, but very strong at safety.

Will be very interesting to see which way they go.....

offensive line is gonna be a challenge next year. believe only tom, maginn, nya and nash have ever played. would be an incredible spot for a grad transfer or two if that’s possible.

Wake will need some of the younger guys to step up. Interior of line should be fine. Tom, Maginn and Nya have gotten plenty of reps and played well.

Replacing both tackles will be a challenge. Nash appears to be the obvious answer for one spot. But who for the other? Spencer Clapp (R-Soph) has been listed as the backup left tackle. But, he hasn't seen the field much Losing Mike Edwards to medical DQ definitely hurts here. At the start of the season, he was penciled in as the heir apparent to Justin Herron.

C.J Elmonus was touted as a guy with potential to challenge for playing time early. Maybe another one of the R-Fr or Soph will step up. Going into next season, at least one of the tackle spots will probably have a very inexperienced player starting.

I have heard that Sage wants to get his degree and he’s one year away from that. That being said, if he tests the water and gets a first/second round grade, he should go IMO

Think Jamie should go while the hype is there. NFL scouts will dissect every throw he has made this year, but they will REALLY dissect every throw next season.
There are more factors working against him next season than for him. He loses:
-the guy who protects his back (Herron) and front (Benzinger)
-probably Sage, definitely Hinton and Scotty.
-a tough ass schedule, thus probably more Ls (he's the leader)
-we will still get crushed by Clemson (of which every decision he makes will be examined against "top" competition) and probably Notre Dame.

Leave before the hype tempers.

Sooooo, is Jamie going to play this week? That injury didn’t look great. Surprised more people aren’t talking about it.

The idea that Jamie's hype is at its pinnacle is wrong. If he finishes with 2 strong games he will be a Heisman candidate entering next season. He has not received the national attention that he is due. His "hype" is just beginning.
