Syracuse Game Time 12:30 pm, RSN

Trying to determine what to expect out of Syracuse is a tough call. This was a team that was ranked preseason that isn't even going to a bowl. Hard to know how much effort they're going to really put into this game.

If we were preseason ranked where Cuse was, we may not have dropped out at all. Preseason rankings are just unfair.

Yeah, it's gonna be a stretch. After the win over Duke we barely seemed to gain any ground in the polls. Going on the road and beating a 4-7 Cuse team probably isn't going to move the needle too much. However, if UVA stops the hell out of Virginia Tech (they're undefeated at home this season) that will definitely knock Virginia Tech out of the CFP rankings and would probably pull UVA into the rankings. We've just gotta hope enough of the teams in the bottom 1/4 of the CFP rankings end up losing over the next few weeks. SMU just lost to Navy so they'll probably flip flop, and the loser of the American championship game (Memphis vs Cincy) might get knocked out. Iowa State goes on the road to KSU this weekend, Iowa plays at Nebraska, so those are two chances for a team to potentially get knocked out with a loss. It's a LOOOONG shot for the Deacs thats for sure. The good news is that most of the rest of the 26-30 teams in the AP/Coaches also lost this past weekend (Texas A&M, Indiana, Pitt, San Diego State + SMU).

Cuse starting QB Tommy DeVito left the L'ville game last Saturday with a knee injury. The 2nd stringer is Clayton Welch (6-5 243 senior). Welch has thrown 32 passes this season, completing 47% with two TDs. Welch is not a running threat.

Former WF recruit, RB Moe Neal from Gastonia is coming off two strong games for Cuse (115 yards against Duke; 163 yards against L'ville); L'ville's defense has been bad (31 ppg; 454 ypg; 5.1 ypc; 7.4 ypp).

Cuse is 1-6 in the ACC having routed Duke. In Cuse's other 6 ACC games, Cuse has surrendered:

41 (Clemson)
16 (State)
27 (Pitt)
35 (FSU)
58 (BC)
56 (L'ville)

Last time here, WF hung 64 on Cuse.

If DeVito and out and their defense is obviously not good, we should win big.
They should also be pretty demoralized after a very disappointing season.
Hopefully Wake keeps the pedal down for the whole game. A blowout win to end the regular season should help our Bowl prospects.
 
Syracuse is giving up almost 6 yards per carry and 243 yards per game on the ground in conference play.

Expect to see a carbon copy of the offensive game plan against Duke.
 
How good is their return man?

This defense seems to do well against QBs that aren't mobile. If the turnover bug doesn't hit and special teams show up, this should be a blowout.

Use Walker for 80% of the carries up until the 4th quarter. Once they are tired, bring in Carney to bury them.
 
FWIW - Tommy DeVito is still listed as QB starter on the depth chart release
 
Justin Strnad played roughly 6½ games this year and has a team-high 69 tackles

through 11 games, Greer has 65 and Smenda 63; there is a chance that Strnad could still be the team's leading tackler going into the bowl game

I was not optimistic about him playing this week after he walked by Saturday during the Deacon Walk. Wearing a boot with a noticeable limp as he went by. Hopefully he's good for the bowl game.

I have a feeling clawson will have this issue fixed by Syracuse. He looked very pissed about it in postgame interview by hot chick on the field.

Yes, he did not look great walking over to Clawson, Currie and Hatch for the Senior Day honors. He is out for a while from all appearances.
