Basham, Surratt, Hartman and Kern return

For clairty, actual NFL coaches and staff and NFL contacts are not the same thing in my mind.

Weak back-pedal. No one receiving a paycheck from an NFL team, which includes scouts, cross-checkers and player development reps, can communicate with a college player with eligibility remaining about his NFL future. All such communications are channeled through the college coaching staff. You think the Pittsburgh Steelers sent some scout down to Winston or Graham, North Carolina to get in Jamie Newman's year to get him out of WF. C'mon.

I think it's far more likely that Quincy Avery (or someone else who will eventually have his hand out if/when Newman gets drafted) told the Newman family that NFL scouts would like to see Newman play a year in a different offense, and he could help him get ready for that move

or, someone associated with another school told Newman or his family that he should move there because pro scouts would like to see him operate a different offense

And, as we all know, nobody involved in professional or amateur sports ever breaks the rules. Ever.

They don't break the rules, when doing so, would be just as likely to help one of the other 29 teams as their own. This isn't like a MLB scout going to Venezuela to communicate with a top prospect when he is under-age to ensure that some other MLB doesn't sign him when he is eligible. Newman is going to be in the 2021 NFL draft, and raising his profile isn't going to help any scout or team that feels that Newman's stock would rise at UGA.

This is silly. Newman asks NFL contacts (official or unofficial) for evaluation. They say "this and this you do well and enhances your draft status. That and that you don't do well and hurts your draft status. Not seeing you in a pro style offense leaves questions about decision making and ability to make certain throws in an NFL offense. That may hurt your draft status." Honest assessment, no intention to persuade him to transfer. Newman or handlers decide that showcasing him in a pro style offense would help...

Newman "Hey coach can we switch to a pro style offense next year?"
Clausen "No"
Newman "Ok, I'm going to check out my opportunities elsewhere"

Okay the last part is tongue in cheek but the first part is a very plausible scenario and does not involve tampering, but could be construed as NFL contacts influencing his decision.

Except that NFL teams do this all of the time and have been for decades.

Talent evaluation must be more difficult than most of us realize. Last night the announcer said that Burrow was a 2* recruit. He sat on the bench at OSU for 2 years and didn't play. Now he is the Heisman Award winner and one of the most accurate passers in recent memory and leads his team to the national championship. Lawrence is really good and Burrow is clearly better. How could so many be so wrong about him?

Maybe he just wasn't all that good as a high school junior and senior.

Or Baker Mayfield starting out as a walk on at Texas Tech.

Nope

Just heard on XM radio espnu that Chase Brice is headed to Georgia.

That would make life more interesting for Jamie than he was expecting. Brice graduates from Clemson in May. 2 years of eligibility left.

Shocking that UGA would bring in another QB after promising Newman he would start. Simply shocked.

Recruited over in what, four days or maybe only three.

ETA:

Wonder how long Jamie has to pull out of UGA and go elsewhere?

Brice’s twitter photo was changed today to show him as a kid wearing a UGA jersey. Talk radio is all over it today.

Not sure - do they sign NLI as transfers? They must do something to make it "official". I'm sure Newman thinks he's better than this guy and he is very likely correct. Newman is good.
