Wake Baseball 2020

Game suspended after five innings, due to rain, with the Deacs leading by a score of 6 - 2. Will be completed at a later date.

Yes it was suspended but 5 innings is a complete game. There is no reason to resume.

That is strange as I would think it was in Walter's hand to decide to take the W since 5 innings completed.

Understand this was a "predetermined" arrangement. Think Walter got himself outmaneuvered.

Walter is a graduate of the Ron Wellman negotiating school. Getting out-maneuvered is what it is all about.

Seems more likely that both coaches agreed to the resumption of play in the event of a rain delay before the game even started. Which seems logical for Walter to agree to, considering we could have been losing if our midweek pitching blew up like last year was probe to.

Or, you know, our coach is an idiot who prefers to risk losing a game that he could just take a win in. Whichever you choose to believe.

Doesn't show a lot of confidence in our ability to handle North Carolina College for Women

It would seem a rain shortened game would be governed by NCAA rules, no? Coaches have the option to resume play later after 5 complete?

Rule 5 Section 9 is the Halted Game Rule. Whether or not to use the halted game rule for a non conference game is up to the two schools and would have been agreed to prior to game. The head coaches tell the umpire at the plate meeting what the choice is. Not that Walter doesn’t have input in the decision but it wouldn’t be solely up to him. It’s an agreement between the two athletic departments.

Why in the hell would he say yes to this? It says in the Wake release that it’s tentatively scheduled for when they play again in April. Just seems like the disadvantage goes to us. Maybe we think we have a deep enough pitching staff that we could handle playing the DH’s. But it seems like we always go 1-1 in DH’s. Why not just move on with the W in our pocket?

I’d love for Conor or Les to ask.

Well if you have to play a DH at least you enter game 1 up 6-2 with only 4 innings to play. Gives you a lot of options to maybe not go with a typical starter in the 1st game and maybe use a couple of your mid inning relievers for an inning or 2 to get you to the 9th, so like our chances to sweep a DH in that position and not have to use up 2 starters before a weekend series with a bigger team.

Game 2 of the Saturday double header against Milwaukee was the only loss of the season (so far).

Thanks again for your write-ups.

I thought maybe the odd man out, Menendez, might end up as the midweek starter.

Could be the case long-term but with another 4-game weekend next week, they'll pretty much have to use Menendez this weekend to keep him on schedule.

After they get through next weekend, the odd man out of the rotation will become something of a "switchblade," as Walt told us, and could be used in long relief on weekends or to start midweek games.

Any clue about this streaming service this weekend? Is it free?

Lazy start to the game 2-0 Beach. Questionable infield hit, lazy walk, 2 run triple. Bad pickoff in the top of the 2nd. Somebody light a fire under these guys.

Yeah that pickoff was inexcusable. Base running mistakes are the biggest no no in baseball.
