Wake Baseball 2020

It was, as I recall, a mid-week OOC game. I think the final score was something like 12 - 8, with the opponent scoring 9 runs in the first inning, all against the same pitcher. All I know is what the box score showed. It happened!

every box score from last season is available here, and the Deacs did not allow 9 runs in the first inning of any game

you are probably referring to this game, in which Witt gave up 6 runs in the first and came back out for the second, to give up 3 more and exit after 1.2 innings pitched. This was a cold day, and the day after an extra inning game in which the bullpen had been stretched, so the thought probably was that we had some unavailable arms.

I think you're thinking of the March 6 loss at Coastal Carolina.

I mean ... that was a Wednesday game. They played 12 innings against Coastal the previous day, burning Cusick, Hearn, Menendez and Fleming. They had played a Sunday doubleheader against Furman. They needed to give Ty Witt every chance affordable, and then some, in that Wednesday game. He gave up 6 in the first and 3 more in the second, in which he got 2 outs.

Thank you, Conor. I appreciate your research, and I apologize to all for making such a mistake. It was Coastal Carolina. The 9 runs, somehow, stuck in my mind as having all been scored in the first inning.

It's all about pitching. Good pitching stops good hitting most of the time. We saw that in '17 when we took a great hitting team down to Florida. I'll believe we have the pitching when I see it. And, even when the pitching is good, a pitcher will occasionally have a bad day and have to be relieved. That's the other point I wish to bring up here. Why would a starter be left in a game until the opposing team has scored NINE runs - in the very first inning? That happened in one game last season! A coach must know "when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em." That's a big part of coaching during a game. And, every game is important. We cannot afford to lose contests we should win. Finally, when I see a pitcher get pulled, even though he's putting up "goose eggs," just because he's reached a certain pitch count, I simply have to wonder - Is he not in shape? At his age? These young men should be able to run a couple of miles non-stop. What's another twenty pitches? Carry on!

As has been noted, it was 2 innings, 6 in 1st, 3 in 2nd. UNC had a similar game in the Regionals at home vs Auburn last year. In that game UNC gave up 13 runs using 4 pitchers in the 1st inning.

If Wake has four viable starters for the three weekend games I would hope the fourth is given the midweek start. There were far too many midweek losses the past two years. That game should be approached as a must win game. It may be against lesser competition, but a loss can derail the momentum established over a weekend series. Winning the games you should win is essential to attaining your goals for a season. It is not time for experimentation nor granting PT. Playing time is earned by performance in the opportunities provided by necessity.

Agreed. I read a thread on Reddit the other day where folks were saying midweek games don’t matter. I 100% disagree with that. Midweek games have kept us out of the tournament multiple times in recent years.

Looking forward to following the baseball team this season. My Step-son is a HS catcher who is in the middle of the College Recruitment process so will be watching with renewed and different interest...

Couple of real good recruits headed to Wake from here in the Tampa area next couple years...

The one kid (c/3B) dons old gold and black already... the other (P) a very simple royal and white. First one is actually playing in a preseason game at our school tomorrow night. My kid will actually play against both of them in the regular season this year. I’ll provide full scouting and uniform reports of course

Schedule update: today’s game moved to 2 PM. I believe it was originally at 4.

Interesting but I do see it getting pretty cold in WS after dark. That being said, I remember covering games at the old park and having to run into the press box around the 5th inning just to warm up for an inning or so.

It's currently 46 and sunny (9 mph winds) in Winston. While not perfect baseball weather, not unplayable conditions. FWIW, there is a force in the universe that requires the first baseball practice and first baseball game to be played in miserable conditions, even if the winter has been unusually mild up to that point. Just always has to be that way.

Cusick already at 35 pitches with 0 outs in the 2nd. Poteet starts the year with a K, picking up from last year. Hope he gets going because his leash should be short. Not sure about starting him off in the 2 hole.

Interesting that freshman Derek Crum is starting in center. Was that expected?

He is the nephew of former Miami Hurricane A-A Football player Maurice Crum.
