Covid-19 - Treatments & Vaccines

What the fuck was that? Does she think that is a pull-up?

She is doing the dance move “the worm” but in the air so it’s called “the inch worm” or the “flying caterpillar”, depending on where you are from.

"Scientists say they have created a new, portable test that can detect coronavirus in just minutes and even identify if it is a highly infectious variant.

Developed by the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, in La Jolla, California, the test is called NIRVANA (nanopore sequencing of isothermal rapid viral amplification for near real-time analysis).

The laptop-sized machine can diagnose COVID-19 in 15 minutes and, at the same time, test for other viruses with similar symptoms like influenza."

So is it safe to assume that the Rona smells like Teen Spirit?

Covid-19 - Treatments & Vaccines

Can't believe that the company that fucked over the public by lobbying to tie up 50% of the strategic reserve funding with its Anthrax vaccine also fucked up manufacturing the J&J vaccine

Johnson & Johnson is reporting a setback in its effort to produce tens of millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses, saying a contract production plant in Baltimore produced an ingredient that failed quality control tests. The material was made by Emergent BioSolutions, according to Johnson & Johnson.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/06/us/emergent-biosolutions-anthrax-coronavirus.html

An investigation by The New York Times found a hidden explanation: Government purchases for the Strategic National Stockpile, the country’s emergency medical reserve where such equipment is kept, have largely been driven by the demands and financial interests of a handful of biotech firms that have specialized in products that address terrorist threats rather than infectious disease.

Chief among them is Emergent BioSolutions, a Maryland-based company now manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines for AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. Last year, as the pandemic raced across the country, the government paid Emergent $626 million for products that included vaccines to fight an entirely different threat: a terrorist attack using anthrax.

Throughout most of the last decade, the government has spent nearly half of the stockpile’s half-billion-dollar annual budget on the company’s anthrax vaccines, The Times found. That left the government with less money to buy supplies needed in a pandemic, despite repeatedly being advised to do so.

Yeah, I can't wait to see what the news media - and especially right-wing media - do with this. I'm sure the facebook posts about it should be interesting as well - "I TOLD YOU SO! IT'S ALL A TRICK!"

Yeah, this is a devastating blow regarding hesitancy.

For the Moderna/Pfizer vaccines, Leonhardt wrote again this morning re: Britain's intentional delay of dose #2, up to 12 weeks after the first, and their improved results with fewer Covid cases. He quotes this op-ed written by three physicians

Some complain that postponing second doses is not "following the science." But the scientific evidence goes far beyond what was shown in the original efficacy trials. Data from the United Kingdom, Israel and now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that first doses both prevent infection and reduce transmission. In people with prior infection, experts are beginning to recognize that a second dose could provide even less benefit. Following the science means updating policies to recognize new evidence rather than stubbornly maintaining the status quo.

We must respond to the evidence and get as many Americans as possible at least one dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. This is how we can save lives and prevent hospitalizations with long-term consequences in this fourth surge.

This is complete lunacy. A handful of blood clot cases out of over 7M doses given. These fuckers failed stats.

And if what I'm reading that all 6 cases are women between the age of 18 and 45, seems like birth control might be the common factor here.

One had just given birth and the risk of blood clots post partum is raised. I don't know if it is in the brain, but maybe one of the MDs can comment.

This seems like lunacy from the FDA. 6 cases out of nearly 7 million?

Another big strike against centrist bureaucracy.

this is a PR disaster and will have everlasting impact on hesitancy

however, the denominator is much lower than 7 million. The clots develop over two weeks - two weeks ago, 3.2 million J&J doses had been administered. The clots are in women aged 18-48. That may represent 25% - 30% of the vaccines given (maybe 55% to women, skewing older than 48, generally).

So we're looking at maybe 6 clots out of maybe a million doses. Outer edge, maybe 2 million is the denominator.

Covid-19 complications (including blood clots!) are still a larger threat, but it's worth exploring whether Pfizer/Moderna are better alternatives for 18-48 year old women.

but again, this is a PR disaster and I have no confidence in the press handling this with any sort of nuance.

Every phlacebo can have side effects just from the injection, this is not anything new. Everyone needs to just do their phair share and take the saline.

You guys still on board for eliminating the evil private insurance companies so the government can administer a single-payer healthcare solution??

100%

The costs of HC would drop dramatically and private insurance companies refuse to pay for drugs all the time. If BCBS or any other private insurance parasite was in charge of vaccine rollout each shot would cost $5K and there would be an 18 month waiting period. Fuck private insurance carriers.

Honestly Brad if the revolution ever comes and I'm in charge, HMO CEOs are the first ones to lose their heads.

They are walking evil.

The federal government can't even competently manage the messaging on a vaccine but your preference is for the same big brains to run a trillion dollar industry?
