2020 MLB Season Thread -- Rays v. Dodgers -- Small Payroll v. Large Payroll

Seeing rumors floating around on Twitter that there’s serious concern about the Cardinals’ latest batch of testing. Will be interesting to see if, and how many, players have it now.

Preliminary report is “several Cardinals players” and “more than five.”

Well we had a great run boys. See y’all all next year.

After all the wrangling about contracts, these guys can’t just not contract COVID?

Of course not. Bunch of entitle, selfish pricks can’t stay in their hotels. The players really screwed themselves over by not agreeing to a bubble. Too late to get a bubble or two organized now. I will be surprised if we have baseball still on the 15th.

Now we have Cespedes missing and the Mets can't find him.

More and more I don't see baseball making it through the season.

Cespedes left his hotel with all his stuff and left town. His agent informed the Mets halfway through the game that he opted out of the season.

It's the Mets. 50/50 that would have happened without the pandemic.

Cardinals have 6-10 positive tests, per reports (4 are inconclusice), 3-4 of which are players.

On a positive note, two of the Phillies tests were apparently false positives. (I hope they're really sure of that.) So it appears the virus spread in the locker room but not on the field.

I was surprised that they had planned to play the Cardinals-Tigers series Tuesday-Thursday and just think Monday off was going to be fine. They finally cancelled it in the past hour.

On a similar note, the Marlins are back in action tonight, with their rag-tag roster in place. Ken Rosenthal (who I tend to trust more than most reporters) is now saying that MLB's investigation is leaning towards someone on the flight from Atlanta to Philly was a super-spreader, since everyone that was in Atlanta but then was sent to Jupiter (the remote training site for the Marlins) all tested negative. https://theathletic.com/1967824/202...9-protocols-but-doubts-nightlife-to-be-cause/

Reports of the Cards going out to casinos after games and partying in the Ozarks before the season started.

Philly gets to resume baseball for a day before the next three NYY games are cancelled due to the hurricane.

Weather is really only a concern for tomorrow. Even there, the news is showing the rain moving out of the city by 7-8 pm, so there's a chance they'll get the game in.

Sucks for the Phillies to be off for over a week and it's Gerrit Cole on the bump facing them.

ETA: Game tomorrow postponed. Doubleheader in Philadelphia on Wednesday at 4:35 and then 30 minutes after. Yankees will be the home team in one of the games in the doubleheader.

Going to suck having two doubleheaders in four days. At least Yankees are off next Monday so it won't screw up the pitching badly (I'm guessing we'll go bullpen for one game on Saturday since Cole is starting the other game and should be able to go all seven).

One thing annoying me about the piped in crowd noise is how badly it obscures the commentary. Presumably the color and play-by-play people have something worthwhile to say. They shouldn't be drowned out by the fake crowd noises. MLB needs to dial that back a few notches.

lol I love Joey Votto.

Cardinals next series is also postponed. They haven't played since July 29 (only playing 5 games) and won't play until August 13 at the earliest.

They've also had some players end up in the ER with COVID issues.

This is (pretty quietly) turning into a disaster for the Cardinals - I'm not really sure how you can make up two weeks worth of games.

Phillies used Neil Walker ( second/first base utility guy) as their "closer" last night. They were behind 10-4 in the top of the ninth inning. He was bringing "heat" at about 70 mph. However, he did manage to get guys out without giving up runs. Couldn't say that about the regular bullpen guys.

He batted in bottom of ninth and made the last out of the game.
