2020 MLB Season Thread -- Rays v. Dodgers -- Small Payroll v. Large Payroll

It was the name of the first professional baseball team in Cleveland. Cy Young even played for them a little while.

Fun fact-in their last ever season (1899) the posted a 20-134 record. This happened largely because the owners bought a second team (St Louis), and sent all of Cleveland's good players there.

MLB has declared that seven of the Negro Leagues are now recognized as major leagues for baseball statistical counting purposes. That adds about 3400 players to the ranks of major leaguers.

The new status applies to all players in the seven leagues beginning with the formation of the Negro National League in 1920. The end date is 1948, the last year the Negro American League and the Negro National League played in the Negro World Series.

This is long overdue. It should have been done when the committee reviewed the early formative leagues of baseball in 1969 and chose which ones were "major leagues" for statistical counting purposes.

IMHO, there should now be a follow-up committee to look at the players in those leagues and select some for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Also, there should be a concerted effort to collect memorabilia from those leagues for inclusion in the HOF.

I'm quite pleased at the recognition of the Negro Leagues. Curious how lifetime records will be integrated with the MLB. Is Josh Gibson now the all-time HR king?

I don't have details on how integrating records will work. But that could happen.

Update: Washington Post article adds some details about how the records will be integrated.

Doesn't look like the career home run record will go to Gibson because many of his homers were hit during barnstorming tours and not in official league games.

However, he may own the single season slugging record. Also the highest season batting average and most recent season of .400+ BA will change.
Many of the career records won't be that impressive because the Negro Leagues seasons were much shorter (70 - 80 games) than the 2019 season. However, the decision to count the nominal 60 game 2020 season makes it easier to fully integrate the shorter season records of the Negro Leagues.

Snell traded to the Padres. Rays deserve a better owner.

Padres gave up a ton of minor league talent to get Snell. Of course, never a guarantee that minor league talent pans out in the bigs. I like the move overall for the Padres...this tightens the gap between them and LA a good bit.

For the Rays, I'd kill for them to get a new ballpark in Ybor City. The Trop just sucks...it's easily the worst MLB stadium out there nowadays (out of the active 28 I've been to).

Watch the Rays get better production out of their haul for Snell, than the Padres get from Snell (who is really good), while paying a lot less. This is just how the Rays operate: trade when a players value is at its peak, acquire talented, but cheap and controllable assets, exceed expectations.

Five years from now, I doubt the Rays are still in Tampa. They can't get a new ballpark, and it won't be long until some other locality agrees to build a new park.

The Trop has been a horrible stadium since it was build. I think it was the last of the massive dome stadiums. It was built to attract a team. Camden Yards opened a few years later and changed the stadium game and the Rays moved into the already outdated Trop a few years after that.

I wasn’t a fan of the Ybor City site. They wanted a lot of city money and it wasn’t clear how the facility would be used the rest of the year. I’d like to see them go to the Florida State Fairgrounds at the junction of I-4 and I-75. The Fairgrounds host plenty of events year round. A stadium could replace the existing pavilions. It is within an hour of St. Pete, Sarasota, and Orlando. Five minutes from an executive airport. Walking distance from Seminole Hard Rock Casino.

The Rays will leave St. Pete. I don’t think they want to move to Tampa. I think they want out of the area completely. They flirted with Montreal but I’m not sure if they’ll move there.

Technically they have never been in Tampa, which is part of their attendance problem. Boring stadium in an area that is a pain to get to for most people in the Tampa Bay area - especially for a weekday evening game.

The "pain to get to for most people" is a much greater factor in the attendance issue than the "boring stadium" issue. Stadium boredom can be greatly alleviated by the product on the field. Hard to get to is hard to get to, no matter what. A really good team will encourage some more people to go to the effort to get to the games, but will continue to discourage casual fans.

Padres also sign the top Korean player and seem to have a deal done for Darvish.

Jeff Passan is reporting that the Mets are about to acquire coveted SS Francisco Lindor and P Carlos Carrasco from the Indians (or should I say Cleveland Basebal Team?) for Andres Gimenez and at least two other top Mets prospects.

Could the NL East just chill the fuck out please.

Indians got a decent haul for Lindor and Cookie. Defs better than the scraps the Cubs got.

certainly a talent difference that caused cleveland to get a better return.

Mets are rumored to be in trade talks with the Cubs for Bryant.

I mean, this is wrong or at least highly debatable. Lindor was definitely going to be traded this year and on a 1 year deal. Darvish did not have to be, would have expected a bigger bidding war/package to pry away Darvish coming off the last 1.5 years and with a 3 year deal left. Just think Indians front office is better than Jed.
