2020 MLB Season Thread -- Rays v. Dodgers -- Small Payroll v. Large Payroll

I had some time today while watching the Chelsea game and figured I'd get a sense of how the travel will look like for each team. The West teams generally have the toughest road schedule, with the Marlins also having a good bit of travel.

For assumptions, I used the following: Zero distance between SF/OAK, NYY/NYM, CHW/CHC. Bus travel between BAL/WAS, MIL/CHW/CHC, LAA/LAD/SD. Train travel between BOS/NYY/NYM and NYM/NYY/PHI/BAL/WAS (except BAL/WAS). Also assuming Toronto plays in Toronto.

Yes, definitely name the MVP award after someone who is forgotten and overlooked.

No offense to Frank Robinson, but it's a dumb idea. Maybe just don't name it after anyone.

Robinson played HS basketball on the same team as Bill Russell and was in the same HS outfield as Vada Pinson (a definitely under-rated player back in the day). There can't be too many schools that have all-time greats in two different sports as alums, at least as contemporaries.
In addition to Pappas, the Reds got Jack Baldschun and Dick Simpson. Players of their caliber were who you always seemed to get in every pack of Topps baseball cards.

Two that would go on to be top-10 GOATs in their respective sports on the same team in high school is pretty damn mind-blowing.

Yankees @ Mets on 9/11/21 for the 20th anniversary.

Odds on Piazza throwing out the first pitch that night?

Posey sitting the year out.

The biggest name to sit out so far. The Giants are going to suck big time either way; that may have played a role. I wonder if any players will bail if their team falls out of contention immediately.

I'd say David Price is just as big a name, but of course he goes out every five days.

It's going to be an ugly year in San Francisco...the NL West was already improving and they have Oakland as their six-game interleague partner.

Rumor is Blue Jays players will be quarantined in the stadium and subject to a $750,000 fine and jail time if they leave. Glad Canada is taking this seriously.

It makes total sense. I'd expect the visiting teams will also be staying in the same hotel (there's plenty of room to hold both teams - over 400 rooms) and the only time they get to leave the complex is for the bus ride to/from the airport.

The Jays also don't have any homestands longer than 14 days (which is the quarantine period currently) so I'd imagine this will be in effect until that restriction is lifted.

I assume the hotel will be closed to everyone else?

Doesn't look like it. I was just able to pull up rooms on Marriott's website for it for Jul 28-30 (when the Jays would be at home playing the Nationals) and Aug 11-13 (when the Jays host the Marlins). Though it might be a place where you can book it and they'll just walk you (since there's no penalty right now for Marriott doing that...I've had a few friends that have been walked due to the hotel being closed for COVID, but they were still selling reservations on the website).

You can't book a stadium-facing room right now though.

This is the hotel: https://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/yyzcc-toronto-marriott-city-centre-hotel/

I’d completely forgotten that the Giants hired Gabe Kapler as their manager. Woof.

Given the number of teams in the hot-spot states of FL, TX, and CA, I'm not counting on games being played before mid-August, if then.
