2020 Presidential Election: Biden v. Trump

Why would changing the debate rules matter? There were already debate rules in place last night, that Trump agreed to before hand, and he completely ignored them. Let’s get some more rules for him to ignore!

I mean, if they did cut his mike, in theory you couldn't hear him when he was going on his stupid rants. All we'd see are his facial expressions which are, generally, not flattering.

There’s no sane person that can counter that sort of disgrace because sane people are internally governed by reason, reality, and a moral code. The campaigns agreed to not talk over each other. One followed that because he said he would. The other threw a tantrum and sounded like a pathetic bully. Elizabeth Warren might have the temperament to not back down from a bully. So what? So does Biden. What do you do when you’re making a point and your opponent is shouting Pocahontas and making offensive mocking Indian gestures and war cries feathers and shit to rattle you? Mayor Pete? Gay jokes. Bernie? He’s a communist Stalin blah blah.

You’re debating Eric cartman. You don’t roll in the mud with a pig. You ignore it and get your points across. If the debate hosts/moderators can’t enforce it then fuck them.

Biden definitely needs to call Trump “Cartman”.
When asked about how his environmental plan would affect the economy Biden should pointed out how well the economy rebounded and wAs doing when he and Obama were pushing green legislation and industry. We don’t have to be scared of some hypothetical.

When Trump interrupted as Biden was talking about Beau, Joe should have told Trump to take his son’s name out of his mouth. Start showing respect for our military. That would have made up for Trump steamrolling the whole event.

Yet another example of Trump shitting on the family of dead soldiers.

I don’t endorse this but I was legit wondering during the debate if Biden’s numbers would go down if he just cold cocked Donald on stage.

That is what Trump was trying to get out of Biden. Verbally, if not physically. Get Biden upset and off message. It didn't work except for a few times.

Something else that really stuck out to me during the debate was how often Trump tried to tell Biden what Biden's own positions are, as if he is a radical leftist. It's very clear Trump has no idea what Biden's platform actually is, and simply wanted to project Fox News' portrayal of AOC and other further leftwing representatives onto him. As much as I wish Biden was more liberal, that's not why he got the nomination. I just have to hope that the way he handled Trump was in a manner people in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan can relate to.

Whether intentional or not, it has to be pretty effective for keeping the base ginned up and confusing uninformed voters. When such inaccurate claims are made about how far left Biden is it forces Biden to respond and takes away from time he could be using to actually explain his positions.

Exactly. Trump's only hope in the debates is to find some way to delegitimize them. This would work to that end.

And then Trump says, "And he just lost the Left!"

Good observations. I talked to someone yesterday who told me she is "just worried about Biden and socialism." So the approach is working with some voters.

I question if it's even worth trying to muzzle or reign him in at all at this point. Don't give him the chance to have a Reagan "I am paying for this microphone" moment by storming off the stage or screaming over a dead mic that the debates are rigged against him.

"Actually, the taxpayers are paying for that microphone - so that excludes you." - Biden's response, hopefully

Otherwise known as Fox viewers.

My parents did not watch the debate but saw highlights and my dad’s impression was that Trump was a bully but that Biden stooped to his level doing things like telling him to shut up.

My parents were split voters in 2016 with my dad voting for the economy. Unclear what will happen this time around but we were on the lake during a recent Trump parade and he said he just doesn’t get how anybody could openly and brazenly support Trump like that.

My parents say they're voting for Biden this year and live in SC - voted for Trump in 2016 and usually vote Pub. But the last time I spoke with my dad, he said he'd vote for Biden but he's scared about all the socialists taking over the Dem party.

No informed voter could possibly believe Biden is a socialist. It’s comical. Of course plenty of voters aren’t informed (objectively) or are informed from the Fox News world.

Agree. The Trump campaign counterpoint:

-
- If elected, Biden won't be setting the course of his presidency due to his age and diminished capacity. Instead, "the left" wing of the party will be pulling the strings.

There are plenty of Republicans who honestly seem to believe that anyone even slightly to the left of Ronald Reagan is a dyed-in-the-wool Communist/Marxist/Socialist radical. In their world there are "Real Americans" and leftist Commies, and not much in between. If Biden isn't a Socialist, then he must be a socialist stooge for AOC or Bernie or something. It's how their mind works.

That's not a Republican condition, it's a human condition. Fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Biden needs to run right to the middle of the road the rest of the way. The progressive wing of the democratic party is not going to leave him. It is far more important he wins as many remaining undecided voters as he possibly can. The fact he took a train tour through rural parts of OH and PA yesterday shows he knows exactly what he needs to do. There are only three attack vectors against him coming out of that debate. One he dealt with well. One he dealt with OK but can do better. And one he ignored.

Vector 1 - You are for the green new deal. He dealt with this well IMO. No, I've got my own plan and here it is. It does see the GND as a framework but ignores parts of it that are completely impractical.

Vector 2 - What about ANTIFA and their violence. He was clear early in the debate that anyone engaging in violence for political ends will be held accountable under the law. Then later he called ANTIFA an idea and not a defined group. The facts do not matter on that last point. He must be unequivocal. Anyone, including anyone with ties to ANTIFA, who engages in politically motivated violence will be held to account under the law. It removes all of Trump's oxygen and turns the entire focus back on Trump's inability to firmly disavow white supremes.

Vector 3 - You are going to pack the USSC. He side stepped this and it will be asked. Trump got a lot of votes last go round with his list of nominees and pledge to appoint them. And about the only thing where Trump appeared composed during the last debate was this question. Yes, I'm the POTUS and the GOP has the Senate and until that is not the case we appoint the judges. Biden should just suck it up, repeat his talking points about Americans deserving a say and then saying when he's President the court will not be expanded but he will be the one making all the appointments. Again, it takes oxygen away from Trump.

This campaign is now about giving Trump nothing to latch onto. He's down. He's going to become increasingly desperate. And the voters who are undecided (the few who remain) are all looking for evidence that Biden will govern from the middle. It's why they are undecided. This election is literally now about getting blue hairs to either not vote or to swing Biden's way, winning back blue collar voters in rural districts who won Trump the last election and soccer Moms (who are rushing to Biden). It could become a landslide if Biden plays it right.
