Labor/Workers movements thread

wow the result is already in

Heaven Hill, which makes Evan Williams, is hiring scabs instead of negotiating with their union workers, who worked during the height of the pandemic to manufacture hand sanitizer that was distributed for free throughout the state.

Those union workers got paid while Heaven Hill took the loss of manufacturing hand sanitizer for free.

If “nobody wants to work” why is management trying to hire new workers instead paying the current workers?

Where did I say no one wants to work?

what does one thing have to do with the other?

Centerdeac complaining past midnight about unions at a liquor company is too perfect.

Seems like a big cause of a lot of problems like supply chains and inflation is a lot of wealthy people sacrificed the long term health of their business for short term profits during a pandemic. It wasn’t far fetched to expect a labor shortage after a global pandemic.

FWIW, the govt has forgiven $0.7Tn of PPP loans already, even though many small businesses took loans and laid off their workforce anyway. Yet, it's politically impossible that we forgive medical debt or the $1.8TN in student loan debt. Can't funnel money to labor, only to capital.

A worker in Florida applied to 60 entry-level jobs in September and got one interview

So Holz, a former food-service worker and charter-boat crewman, decided to run an experiment.
On September 1, he sent job applications to a pair of restaurants that had been particularly public about their staffing challenges.
Then, he widened the test and spent the remainder of the month applying to jobs — mostly at employers vocal about a lack of workers — and tracking his journey in a spreadsheet.

Two weeks and 28 applications later, he had just nine email responses, one follow-up phone call, and one interview with a construction company that advertised a full-time job focused on site cleanup paying $10 an hour.
But Holz said the construction company instead tried to offer Florida's minimum wage of $8.65 to start, even though the wage was scheduled to increase to $10 an hour on September 30. He added that it wanted full-time availability, while scheduling only part time until Holz gained seniority.

In a Facebook post on September 29, which went viral on Twitter and Reddit as well, Holz said, "58 applications says y'all aren't desperate for workers, you just miss your slaves."
"My opinion is that this is a familiar story to many," he added.

With respect to student labor.

[h=1]MSU asks faculty, staff to volunteer in dining halls[/h]

EAST LANSING — Short thousands of student workers in campus dining halls, Michigan State University is asking faculty and staff for help.
In an email sent to MSU deans, directors and chairs on Monday, Vennie Gore, senior vice president for residential and hospitality services and auxiliary enterprises, invited faculty and staff to volunteer without extra pay in the dining halls.
“As you know, like other schools and universities across the country, Culinary Services is experiencing severe staffing shortages,” Gore wrote. “Many businesses in the local area and around the country are hiring, and we are all competing for the same available talent."
To mitigate the shortage, Residential and Hospitality Services has already asked 132 full-time department employees to work eight hours a week in the dining halls.
