This is really well said. Many ideologues are so full of hubris and purity that just cant accept something that is better unless is perfectly fits their narrative. Happens every day on the business world and those that embrace the approach tend to excel as leaders and those that don't well, they eventually crash and burn.
Health policy is one area that a compromise could actually work quite well (my thinking has evolved on this quite a bit over the past 8 years). The issue is both the hard left and the hard right think ACA is terribly flawed. But, gasp., imagine a world where a few things are modified that actually drives us to affordable (to the consumer) universal coverage? The issue is the Rs see the ACA as socialism and unless private insurers are eliminated lefty Ds go bonkers. So we are stuck with only a slightly better system than we had in 2014. Thanks hubris.
"Idealogues", "Hubris", "Purity", - all vague and condescending insults from people who can't confront very real and specific harms with spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations. You'd do well to remember that for all your bloodless academic analysis, there are people getting paid 13.50 an hour 8 hours a day to tell insurance customers that their procedure isnt covered or that the heart medicine keeping them alive will cost hundreds of dollars a month next year. To cry on the phone with people facing bankruptcy. Go condescend to them.
