Frank Howard has to go at Clemson!

Public statues (including named rocks) are architecture that praise individuals for the qualities we expect of citizens. That's exactly why it's "Howard's Rock." They're not permanent though. We forget about, rediscover, and reframe historical figures all the time. Maybe instead of preventing this history from finding its way into high school textbooks, we could be more honest about our past? God knows the current moment calls for it.

IMO, it's long overdue for America to put a Black person worthy of praise on currency (excluding Confederacy currency that highlighted depictions of slavery).

Soooooooo lets just put everyones name you dont like on a urinal block so you can pisss on it would that make you happy. I think not. And you did not address banning movies and books give me list of what you think should be banned burned shit on..................

Don’t be giving people ideas now.

There is a difference between removing glorification of an individual and attempting to remove all traces. People's accomplishments and achievements can more properly be balanced with their warts and flaws through history books. Tough to do with a statue or named building.

Mmhmm. Don't know why this is so hard for people to grasp. I think there are a lot of people who do still glorify shitty people, and don't like being called out for it.

Don't GAF about Frank Howard. Fine with me if his name is deleted from Clemson history, but how far does this go?

The following US Presidents owned slaves:

George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
James Madison
Andrew Jackson
Martin Van Buren
William Henry Harrison
John Tyler
James K Polk
Zachary Taylor
Andrew Johnson

Even US Grant owned a slave for two years (he freed that slave in 1859). So, are we going to change the name of the nation's capital? Are we going to take Washington and Jefferson off Mount Rushmore? Is JMU going to change its name? Andrew Jackson getting taken off the $20 bill? Is that the next step?

Also, it doesn't take a lot of digging to find patently racist positions by historical figures (e.g., Woodrow Wilson). Should all public references (e.g., schools, libraries, museums, street names, city names) be changed for all those that took positions that are abjectly racist in retrospect?

You bet, if the sentiments of the formal BLM's group becomes the majority opinion in the U.S. May take a generation passing, but I could see it happening, eventually.

Emory & Henry College, a d-3 school in Virginia, has the athletic nickname WASPS - after the stinging insect. But, their president fears that people will now associate that name with the acronym "WASP" for white Anglo-Saxon protestant. And of course everyone knows that the worst thing you can be right now is a white Anglo-Saxon protestant. So, he wants the school's nickname changed. I suggested he change the nickname to Pocomos - for politically correct morons - but I doubt that nickname will make the final list.

And, since "Deacon" conjures up the vision of a white Anglo-Saxon protestant, I'm all-in on Wake changing its name, too. How about it, Nathan! Let's get to work on that!

"I agree with our Native American population. I am
highly jilted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins.
One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native
Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be
careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and
courtesy, we must move forward.

"Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the
Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the
reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get
rid of the Cleveland Browns.

"The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of
militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white
folk.

"The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a
team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference
to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives. I
am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion
among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New
Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

"Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and
pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the
Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh
Pirates!

"Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message
to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting
or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

"The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a
growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The
Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our
children.

"The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying. Wrong message
to our children.

"So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out
to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become
involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the
do-nothing Congress loves.

"As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in
mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the name of the
Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the
Beavers (especially when they play Southern California. Do we really
want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers???"

Braves say they're sticking with Braves. Will think about the tomahawk on the uniform and maybe talk about the chop later.

And that rock is more likely to have come out of Frank Howard's backyard than Death Valley, CA.

Catholics have deacons too, thankfully.
