RJ's Thread-How many will get Covid at Jerry World?

I've been a bad boy...but the people who came to threads for the purpose of derailing them got no punishment...It's all my fault they acted that way.

It looks like all NBA owners will be meeting with governors and mayors to turn their arenas into polling places. They should also be drop off points for mail-in votes.

Conor's great column shows racism is sadly still alive, well and thriving at Wake. It hasn't changed much since the 70s or before. In fact, it seems like it could be worse. A player said his teammates and he seem to be segregated within classes which wasn't the case in classes I was in at Wake.

Maybe it's not quite as open on campus as when KAs and others called myself and others N-lover out loud after seeing us hanging out with our black friends.

It's sad that even today Grow A Pair is treated the way she is. It's time to stop being nice and coddling this inbred racism. The Wake community should be ashamed and should be called out on it.

It's a sad commentary on Wake Forest that the only improvement is a higher percentage of black students. It comes as no surprise for an institution that strives to be "elite".

Well, it's that time of the year again, but in September rather than May and that has changed the race dramatically as three of the top horses were ready early in the year, but not now.

Here is a link to the eligible horses https://www.kentuckyderby.com/horses

You can click on each horse to watch their races if you want to see how they look.

Tiz the Law is likely to go off at EVEN money which very, very rarely happens. He does look much the best. He is a fun story. He is owned by the group of friends from upstate NY who won in 2003. They like to show up to their horses' races in old, yellow school buses. I'm not sure the entire group will be allowed to attend next weekend.

Art Collector has looked excellent recently and will be the second choice. He's got a great story as well. His trainer, Tom Drury, has won fewer races in his thirty career than some of big trainers have won in the two or three years. The Blue Grass was his first Grade 1 win. He's become a specialist who figures what's wrong with expensive horses, fixes it and sends them back to the big name trainer, who makes millions from those horses. On emotion, you have to pull for Drury.

Authentic is Bob Baffert's Derby horse (although he's really the #4 3 year old in the stable, the others are hurt) and has looked great and average. He's won easily and gotten passed like he's standing still by Honor AP. Distance could be a problem for Authentic.

Honor AP is trained by John Sheriffs, who won the Derby with 50-1 shot Giacomo and trained the great Zenyatta. Sheriffs moves to the beat of his drummer, but wins a lot of big races. Honor AP looked like monster when he beat Authentic in the Santa Anita Derby. Then, he bounced and threw in a stinker last race. If he runs like he did in the SA Derby, he'll give Tiz the Law a race.

King Guillermo hasn't run since finishing second to Nadal (Baffert's injured horse) in the Arkansas Derby in May. That was a good second. He easily won the Tampa Bay Derby. He is owned by 5X MLB All Star Victor Martinez. The stories are the horse has been training lights out, but few horses win the Derby with that much time off.

The rest are basically running for spots in the trifecta and superfecta.

After the draw, we'll get a little more serious.

RJ, any thoughts on Lute or John Thompson?

Sad news.

Today reminds me of how ridiculously good Patrick Ewing was, too.

Only thing keeping Ewing from an NBA title was Air Jordan.

Ewing - NCAA title, multiple final 4; no NBA title
Hakeem - multiple final 4, no NCAA title; NBA titles
Ralph Sampson - no NCAA final 4; no NBA titles
David Robinson - he played at Navy; NBA titles
Shaq - no NCAA final 4; NBA titles
Duncan - no NCAA final 4; NBA titles

Then you have:
Russell: NCAA and NBA titles
Lew Alcindor: NCAA and NBA titles

Wilt: not known for titles, but did get NBA title; his first college game against Northwestern, as a SO, he scored something like 52 pts. with 31 rebounds; 1957 NCAA title game viewed as 1 of best coaching jobs ever by Frank McGuire (UNC).

Thompson was a tough guy. He and John Chaney really changed opportunities for black coaches. He did make sure his guys go to class and most did graduate.

Lute was one of the great recruiters ever, but an average coach. His players loved him. I played a couple of times with Miles Simon and Reggie Geary and they loved playing for him.

Each will be missed.

RE: Ewing- he didn't win before MJ got good nor did he win when MJ was gone.

EDIT: People in Philly were completely baffled at how the rest of the country thought Nova beating G'town for the championship was the biggest upset in sports history to that point. They had played twice that year. I think one went OT and was a two point G'Town win. The second game was a one possession game until the last 45 seconds and some free throws made it a five point loss. With a little luck Nova could have beaten the Hoyas three times that year.

Just saw that legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas has recovered from a battle with Covid. At 85, he's training a decent stable and riding nearly every day. Hope the Coach (his nickname) is back in the full swing soon.

The Filly Derby Draw is out:

1. Swiss Skydiver | 8-5
2. Tempers Rising | 50-1
3. Donna Veloce | 15-1
4. Speech | 5-1
5. Gamine | 1-1
6. Bayerness | 50-1
7. Shedaresthedevil | 20-1
8. Hopeful Growth | 30-1
9. Dream Marie | 50-1

Normally, having the #1 hole would be a detriment, but Swiss Skydiver is going right to the lead.

It really does look like a match race between Swiss Skydiver and Gamine.

If you want some extra action, you can either do a large Swiss Skydiver/Gamine with Tiz the Law Oaks/Derby Double. It'll pay more than it should due to the size of the pool. Normally neither of those would pay over $7. I think both may pay over $10 possibly over $12.

If you want to take a shot, maybe play a $5 the pair of doubles above and smaller ones of Swiss Skydiver/Gamine with Honor AP/Art Collector/King Guillermo.

Art Collector hurt his foot and will miss the Derby. That is so sad. The trainer deserved to have a Derby horse.

1 Finnick The Fierce 50-1
2 Max Player 30-1
3 Enforceable 30-1
4 Storm The Court 50-1
5 Major Fed 50-1
6 King Guillermo 20-1
7 Money Moves 30-1
8 South Bend 50-1
9 Mr. Big News 50-1
10 Thousand Words 15-1
11 Necker Island 50-1
12 Sole Volante 30-1
13 Attachment Rate 50-1
14 Winning Impression 50-1
15 NY Traffic 20-1
16 Honor A.P. 5-1
17 Tiz The Law 3-5
18 Authentic 8-1

I don't think I've ever seen a horse as a 3/5 Morning Line Favorite. No horse has ever won the Derby from #17 post, but that can be deceptive without seeing who has been there.

The odds of three favorites getting the three outside positions has to be astronomical in an open draw. I think it hurts Authentic the most.

I may end up eating my words, but I think Baffert's Thousand Words is a sucker's bet. Of course, there's a successful angle that says bet the bigger odds when Baffert has two horses in a race.

Here's a link to Brisnet's Past Performances for the Derby. I like DRF better, but lots of people like this one.

Not a big deal, but heading into the NCAA Final, G'town had beaten Villanova twice. 52-50 in OT at Nova in January, and 57-50 at Georgetown in February. Also, G'town had not lost to anyone since January and had won 15 straight heading into the NCAAA final, including beating #2 St. John's 3 times. During G'town's streak, they had not really played a close game. The closest game was a 60-54 win over loaded #6 Georgia Tech (Mark Price, John Salley, Bruce Darymple). In the National Semifinal, G'town drilled St. John's by 18 (77-59). Oh yeah, G'town was also reigning national champs. So, there was reason to think G'town would handle Nova in the final. FWIW, Nova won that final game by just two points, despite shooting 79% field, a record that may never be broken, missing only 6 shots in the game. G'town was also called for 10 more fouls than Nova. Nova played a played a perfect game and won by 2. It was a big upset.

If you play a team twice and beat by 2 in OT and were up by only 3 with less than a minute to go before fouling, it may be an upset, but those are basically evenly matched teams. What G'town did to other teams isn't that relevant if you had played each other twice.

It wasn't anything like the Buster Douglas level upset many portray it to be.

For $16 or $32 (depending if you want to be $0.50 or $1), you could bet a trifecta of:

Tiz the Law/Honor AP/ all
Honor AP/Tiz the Law/all

If Authentic or Thousand Words come in 3rd, you could lose or barely break even, but there are lots of 50/1 shots who could make it pay.

Happy birthday, old man! Give me your 5* lock of the Derby to make the most money for the smallest investment.

Thanks...unfortunately, Tiz the Law looks much the best.

For $16 it might be fun to do the trifecta idea I posted above. What you would say is : I'd like a $0.50 Trifecta Wheels - 17/16/ ALL and 16/17/ALL.

You would hope for 16/17/ALL to hit. If one of the 30/1 or 50/1 shots come in third. That would pay $150-300.

If you have two other friends, you could each bet $9 on the Pick 4 that end with the Derby. The fun part of this bet is what you could do is each pick one horse in the other races and the Tiz the Law and Honor AP in the Derby. If you pick a middle to longshot in two of those other races, it could easily pay $300-600.

Of course, if you bet with you buddies, you can give them shit if your horses do well and theirs suck.

I'll probably bet the form for Saturday late Thursday or early Friday and post some bets Friday afternoon.

If you've never bet online, check out tvg.com or xpressbets.com. They often give bonuses for signing up.
