Truist Field at Wake Forest

These are the scoops that I come here for. I've been sitting on this intel for almost 24 hours and couldn't contain my excitement.

There has to a company bigger than BB&T/Truist willing to bid more for naming rights on an ACC stadium. Currie should look into this. I know Dolphin stadium changes its name every year because ownership just gives it to the highest bidder.

They're the Dolphins. In the NFL. In Miami.

Honestly, I think paying big money for naming rights will probably become a dying trend. It may already be dying. Truist seems to keep it going.

Truist seems to want to throw their name on pretty much any stadium in the Southeast.

My take on it is that the original name on the arena tends to be the one that sticks. I still call the arena in Atlanta Phillips Arena, Boston is the FleetCenter, White Sox is still Comiskey, etc.

I didn't realize Phillips Arena was State Farm Arena. That happened two years ago and I've watched several Hawks games since then. I guess brands do the research to justify spending the money. I assume they get enough return from it.

Exactly. I was coming off a flight a couple of years ago in Atlanta on a Friday night and hopped in an Uber to go to my apartment. The driver had the Hawks game on the radio and it said State Farm Arena and I had no idea that the arena had been re-named. Was confusing.

State Farm as a brand makes sense to do something like that, given that they do a lot of marketing with the NBA and NFL.

The initial naming rights expired in 2017, so no telling how bad Wellman fucked us on the new deal. He liked to lock in long-term contracts at bad rates for Wake Forest like it was going out of style.

If Wellman was involved, I suspect we somehow will end up owing Truist tens of millions of dollars before this contract ends.

I generally agree with you, but nobody refers Bank of America Stadium as Ericsson Stadium.

And nobody even knows what the Miami stadium is called because it changes names so often.

Good point. I had completely forgotten about it being called Ericsson Stadium. Maybe because I only went to games there after I started going to Wake in 2004, or maybe because I don't recall seeing anyone use an Ericsson cell phone in this millennium.

I still call Miami's stadium Joe Robbie Stadium. I remember it had some dumb name after some underwear company or something back in the 1990s.

Now that I Wikipedia'd it, here's the list of names for the Miami stadium:

Name Duration
Joe Robbie Stadium August 16, 1987 – August 25, 1996
Pro Player Park August 26, 1996 – September 9, 1996
Pro Player Stadium September 10, 1996 – January 9, 2005
Dolphins Stadium January 10, 2005 – April 7, 2006
Dolphin Stadium April 8, 2006 – May 7, 2009
Land Shark Stadium May 8, 2009 – January 5, 2010
Dolphin Stadium January 6, 2010 – January 19, 2010
Sun Life Stadium January 20, 2010 – January 31, 2016
New Miami Stadium February 1, 2016 – August 16, 2016
Hard Rock Stadium August 17, 2016–present

Who the fuck changes the name of a stadium after two weeks? And then Dolphins Stadium to Dolphin Stadium? Really? And then New Miami Stadium in 2016? After the damn thing had been open for nearly 30 years? Renovations aren't the same thing as making it new.

Porn companies are still trying to get involved. Bang Bros offered $10 million for the naming rights to the Miami Heat's arena. Cams.com has offered UCLA $20 million a year to have it's logo on all UCLA uniforms. https://deadspin.com/the-porn-industry-is-flirting-with-the-sports-world-1844262440

How about Groves Stadium at Brazzers Field or Naughty America Stadium at Wake Forest? Let's get ahead of the game!

Given the dire financial straights that all college athletic programs (including ours) could find themselves in, I'm generally OK with corporate sponsorship of stadiums. Getting cash in the door is important at this juncture, even if it results in clunky stadium names and eye rolls.

Yeah, I couldn't care less what our football stadium is named... Especially when it is bringing money into the school / athletic program.

It could be MUCH worse than having a boring bank pay for the naming rights.
