Football issues

Asking for a raise in the midst of a pandemic that is costing universities and ADs millions (billions?) of dollars is pretty silly, IMHO. Would it be an "adult" thing to do for universities to cut sports to offset losses and not honor those scholarships?

well, for the schools, it's all about the academics for the student-athletes

it's why student comes first

Asking for health insurance is a very reasonable demand. The schools are asking these guys to undergo serious risk to their health during a pandemic. And when they get sick (some of them will), they are completely on their own to figure out how to get care. That's fucked up.

Declaring them employees and making them subject to the Workers' Comp laws unreasonable? It opens a can of worms such as possible FLSA claims, etc. but that would be one approach.

I don't know. There are people out there who get paid 7 figures a year to figure this shit out. A kid who is playing football for UCLA (who is receiving millions for the broadcast of said game) and contracts COVID as a result shouldn't be stuck with $50,000 hospital bill as a result. They need to solve that issue.

Yeah definitely agree this is reasonable and necessary. Demanding a 50/50 revenue split and insisting that your school/conference basically withdraw from NCAA competition is not reasonable (or necessary).

No it's not - living up to a signed contract is being an adult.

Would colleges be acting like 'an adult', if they said - 'we are going to cancel all scholarships (signed contracts) for this 2020 due to the pandemic'?

A vast majority of the coaches that lead and mentor these young men do not honor their contracts. They constantly renegotiate and break contracts to move schools.

Why should the players act any differently?

Scholarships are for only one year, with certain limited exceptions. I guess the transfer portal is somewhat analogous to a coaches' buyout clause. From a moral/ethical standpoint, you have a good argument.

Some of y'all are clearly pretty uncomfortable with young black men asserting themselves. Not a good look for you.

You can become a man as long as we can treat you like you’re “Boy.”

There’s always been something kind of uncomfortably infantalizing about calling 18-22 year old men “kids” just because they are playing a sport. The posts on here are another side of that coin

Who pays the bill when a college athlete gets ACL surgery? It's the school isn't it? Should be no different.

That is a racist assumption. It matters not in the least what the color of the skin is, the question simply concerns the appropriateness of the assertion. If a 22 year old decides to assert himself by stealing your car do you congratulate him for being assertive? Assertiveness is not always a good thing.

Endeavoring to use a position to which you were invited and for which you are being liberally rewarded as leverage for gaining advantage that would potentially destroy the entire system is, to my mind at least, inappropriate. Requesting health insurance as needed for the pandemic is reasonable. 50% of the receipts is not.

yes - my son was a D1 athlete in a non-revenue sport and had his medical bills picked up by the program

And some people donate money to charities in this country. That doesn’t change the fact that we pay low taxes and treat our disadvantaged like street trash.

A small act of benevolence doesn’t make up for systematic inequality and exploitation.

Football players looking at forcing the conference out of the NCAA is very football centric. Removing the basketball teams from March Madness, baseball and softball teams from College World Series etc. would have significant impact on athletic revenue. Wonder what their fellow athletes in basketball think about the idea of not being able to compete in the NCAA basketball tournament?

College sports is very football-centric. I don't see a thread titled "Field Hockey Issues."

They would just their own tournament?

So asking their fellow athletes who play basketball to give up NCAA tournament exposure and income. Also removing them from early season tournaments, the trips and associated revenue.

The race card has been heavily played poorly on this thread. Becoming illeligable in all other sports is unreasonable and unfair. You'd be screwing so many black athletes
